WireGuard vs OpenVPN vs IKEv2 - the speed and security nightmare I didn't see coming

so i finally switched vpn protocols thought id get better speed same security right? wrong. all the hype about wireguard being fastest is just hype imo. ran some tests its fast but security? kinda sus. openvpn feels more solid even if slower. ikev2 is in between not sold on it tbh. real kicker is i switched on the fly and my data got exposed a couple times yeah not cool. vpn providers keep pushing "security" but like are they just following trends? now im worried about privacy cause i thought wireguard was

you ever try NordVPN's obfuscation feature? keeps WireGuard more secure and kinda hides its speed. ymmv but worth a shot if you're worried about data leaks.

never trusted obfuscation much myself, feels like a bandaid kinda thing. security should be about solid encryption, not just hiding traffic. rn, just sticking with openvpn and strong passwords, no fuss

nah, I call BS on that. ran some tests its fast but security? bruh, I've seen setups where WireGuard's just as secure but folks get lazy with configs. speed's cool but don't forget, if your encryption's weak or you mess up your keys, it doesn't matter if it's fast. I'd rather have solid openvpn than a speed fest that's sus security-wise.

ngl 93 percent of security is about proper setup, not just the protocol. I agree, if you cheap out on configs or passwords, no VPN protocol can save you. people forget that.

WireGuard actually is the fastest of the three but also the least battle tested long term. My tip - don't just chase speed, check the audit history and how often the code gets reviewed. Fwiw, sometimes slower OpenVPN can actually be more secure if it's been around longer and has more real-world testing.

You really got smh'd by how complex it all is huh? lol always surprises me how fast ppl switch to what they think is better without digging deep

Been doing this 3 years, and honestly I think a lot of folks overlook how often security patches come through. Speed's cool but if a VPN's flaky or unpatched, you might as well not use it. Sometimes slower protocols with solid audits are way more reliable long term.

Yep exactly I remember testing a new VPN setup for a client once and I went with IKEv2 thinking it'd be solid on speed but then the whole thing kept disconnecting randomly and I had to go back to the drawing board. Sometimes the best tech ain't always the fastest or most flashy.

100%, people jump ship so quick without really understanding what they're messing with. kinda funny how many just follow the hype train without digging into the tech. speed and security are more like a dance, not a one-size-fits-all

spot on, ive seen plenty of folks chase speed and forget about patching or stability, makes all the difference in the end.

bruh, if you want a solid combo of speed and security, I'd go with WireGuard, just works smoother and keeps things simple.

Haha, true that, wireGuard is like the Tesla of VPNs, sleek and fast. but ever had issues with compatibility or configs?

33% of users report speed issues with WireGuard, so I think it's not the perfect fix everyone says. Sure, it's fast in theory, but I've seen it cause lag and connection drops more than once. Just saying, don't buy into the hype without testing your own setup.
