WireGuard vs OpenVPN vs IKEv2 - speed and security face-off

Yo, just ran some quick tests on these protocols and gotta share the results. I VPN pretty much daily for streaming and privacy stuff. So I grabbed a 200 Mbps fiber connection, and ran each protocol with the same server (US West Coast). OpenVPN (UDP) was pretty solid, got me around 150 Mbps, not bad, but kinda choppy in busy times. IKEv2 blew that out of the water with like 180 Mbps consistently, plus it reconnects super fast if I lose signal nice for mobile. But WireGuard is the real star here, hitting 190 Mbps, almost maxing out my line, and it's way lighter on CPU too. Security-wise, IKEv2 and WireGuard are both top tier, but WireGuard's code is leaner and easier to audit (and it's open source, so that helps). OpenVPN still a good choice if you need compatibility but honestly, WireGuard feels like the future. ymmv tho, some regions still have issues with WireGuard, but in my tests, it's blazing fast and feels just as secure, if not more. Anyone else running these protocols? Would love to hear if your speed is similar or if I got some weird setup. Cheers.

nah, i dunno about that, i get more stable speeds with OpenVPN sometimes even tho it's slower. do u think ur testing method might be influencin the results?

Are you using the same server location for all tests? Sometimes the server load or regional routing can skew speeds pretty hard.

actually, I think you meant to say WireGuard is close to maxing out your line, not IKEv2. IKEv2 usually hits a bit lower for me.

Did you see any difference in speed or stability when switching server locations? I wonder if regional routing or server load really impacts the results that much. Sometimes I feel like the closest server isn't always the fastest. Just curious if you've noticed anything similar. Stay chill.

just my 2 cents: make sure you're testing at different times of day to account for server load variations. speeds can fluctuate a lot depending on how busy the server is. also, try switching servers if possible to see if your results are consistent across locations.

Careful with the choppiness in busy times, might wanna check your server load or try a different protocol at peak hours. Sometimes switching to TCP can help stabilize things.

yep totally agree, I saw similar stuff. ran some tests during peak hours and speeds tanked for me on OpenVPN but WireGuard stayed pretty steady. load really makes a difference.

Haha, sounds like you got your VPN game on point. I've seen similar speeds with WireGuard too, but sometimes regions or ISPs mess with it. Wondering if you've tried it on different devices?

Bruh, lol, you really think WireGuard's maxing out your line? Ymmv but in my tests it's usually around 150-170 Mbps max, not always hitting 190. Could be your setup or server location? I dunno, maybe you got some special configs or your ISP is just better at handling it.

Just my 2 cents: if you wanna squeeze even more speed outta WireGuard, try tweaking the MTU size on your device, like dropping it from 1500 to 1400 or 1380. I've seen that boost stability and sometimes speed, especially in regions with weird network congestion. Might be worth a shot if you're pushing the limits lol.

Last month i set up WireGuard on a new router and it was almost instant to get going. I agree, the code being leaner makes me sleep better at night. Security's only as good as how much you trust the code, and WireGuard's simplicity is

Appreciate the feedback guys. Yeah, I kept server location constant for all tests, so I don't think that skewed stuff much. About stability, ymmv - my setup might be different from yours. And true, WireGuard's probably closer to maxing out my line, I mighta misspoke on IKEv2.
