WireGuard on mobile - battery drain warning

Been using WireGuard on my phone for a few weeks now and rn I notice a pretty big hit to battery life. Like, I get maybe 20-25% drop in a day even with light usage. At first I thought it was just my device but tested on two different phones and same thing. Seems like the protocol, while fast and secure, isn't optimized for mobile power consumption. If ur planning to run it constantly on ur mobile, be aware that it might drain ur battery faster than other VPNs or protocols.

Did you try setting WireGuard to connect only when needed instead of always on? That can save some juice.

Actually I think it's more about how the app is running in background rather than the protocol itself. Have you tried killing it when not in use or restricting background data? might help save some battery too.

yo killing the app helps but honestly best way is to set it on a schedule or use on-demand connections, so it's not running all the time and draining battery unnecessarily

Spot on. I tried running WireGuard constantly on my old phone and it chewed thru the battery but then I switched to a different protocol and it barely made a dent. Honestly, sometimes I think these apps just aren't optimized for mobile power efficiency no matter what the protocol claims

bruh, u sure it's just the protocol? smh, ive seen apps drain more battery just from bad coding or bad background process management. try using a battery saver app that kills or restricts apps when not actively in use, might help u get more life outta ur phone.

Wait, u sure u meant "might drain" and not "will drain" lol? sounds more like a "better not leave it on 24/7" kinda deal.

Are you sure you tested it long enough? I've been running WireGuard 24/7 on my phone and it barely affects battery. Maybe your setup or config is different?

man definitely try using NetGuard to monitor and limit background activity, rn it's helped me cut down on battery drain with VPNs running constantly.

honestly been doing this 12 years in the game, and honestly i wonder if the battery drain is more about how u configured WireGuard or ur device's power management. did u check if any apps or processes are running in the

Careful with assuming it's just the protocol. Sometimes, enabling ULA or tweaking keepalive settings in WireGuard can help cut down on battery drain, especially if it's running 24/7. Might be worth a shot

yeah, i've seen similar drops. sometimes changing keepalive or turning off unnecessary app syncs helps. also, check if your device's battery saver kicks in when VPN runs.

Thanks for the tips guys, really appreciate it. Yeah I tried setting it to connect only when needed, but rn I just manually toggle it to save juice. On-demand sounds good, I'll try that too, maybe set a schedule or use some app to automate turning it on/off. Would be legit if WireGuard added a native battery saver mode rn
