WireGuard on a cheap VPS vs yearly VPN sub - did the math and.

yo everyone keeps going on about self-hosted wireguard on some cheap vps like 3 bucks a month. privacy first blah blah. so i threw up a hetzner box, followed some guides, got it working. it's fast, no doubt. my wireguard tunnel hits like 650 mbps download. but the bill for data? lol. blew through my 20tb a month in like 2 weeks cuz i forgot to route all my desktop traffic. including a big client sync. that "cheap" vps ended up costing me like 40 extra bucks that month. not so cheap anymore. the worst part is support. when my ip got flagged by netflix and i couldn't stream? i was on my own. no rotating residential ips, no obfuscated servers. just me and a blocked ip. for torrents whatever but you're still a single point of failure with that vps and if you don't know sysadmin stuff good luck fixing leaks. a yearly vpn sub costs like 5 bucks a month and they handle all that stuff. sometimes paying for the managed service is smarter, ymmv.

ok so last month I set up a wireguard for a buddy, forgot to limit bandwidth and it ran up a huge bill in no time. people think free or cheap is smart till you hit the limits or leak info. paying for a decent VPN might be boring but it

different angle: maybe consider a managed VPN that offers decent privacy and low maintenance instead of DIY. stuff like Mullvad or ProtonVPN might save you headaches and money in the long run, especially if you're not sysadmin savvy. ymmv but sometimes paying for ease is just smarter.

ever had a client sync blow through your data cap and then realize the real cost of DIY VPNs? how do you keep that under control without turning into a sysadmin nightmare?

different angle: sometimes the peace of mind and support from a legit vpn sub is worth the extra cost, especially if you gotta worry about leaks or support issues. DIY is cool but man, it can get sus real quick when stuff blows up lol. smarter to pay a lil more and keep it simple sometimes.

yeah, totally agree. once you do the math, setting up your own wireguard on a cheap vps is usually way cheaper in the long run if you're okay with managing it yourself. makes a lot of sense for more tech-savvy folks.

did a quick calc last month, and running a tiny VPS for wireguard cost me about 20 bucks a year. compared to 100+ for a VPN sub. kinda crazy how much you save if you don't mind the setup hassle.

nah, not so fast. just because you save on the sub doesn't mean it's hassle-free. 2) you gotta think about uptime, security, updates, and all that maintenance

Appreciate the feedback guys. Yeah, the key is managing your own setup if you wanna save serious cash. VPS prices keep dropping and if you're comfy with the tech, it's a no-brainer ymmv.

lol, sounds like you did the math but forgot to count the time setting up the VPS, not just the cost lol. one time I thought I'd save a buck and ended up spending way more fixing stuff, never again.

you really think a cheap VPS is gonna save you long term? lol, unless you count your time fixing stuff and babysitting it like a babysitter. trust me, the hassle and hidden costs add up faster than the sub. ymmv but I've been there, done that.

20 bucks a year for a VPN? Sounds tempting till you factor in the time spent messing with the VPS, updates, configs, and all the little issues that pop up. That cheap VPS might seem like a win, but imo it's just a ticking time bomb for headaches and hidden costs.

been messing with this 3 years, fam. honestly, the cheap VPS route sounds good but ends up being a pain long term. the time spent fixing and updating adds up, better just pay for a solid VPN sub tbh.

you ever try running a cheap VPS for more than a few months? lol, it's a total time sink. spent a year tinkering with configs and updates, felt like a full-time job, vs just paying for a VPN and forgetting about it. sometimes the cheap route costs more in your free time than a legit sub

Yeah, I remember spending like 2 weeks straight just tweaking configs on a VPS, thinking it was saving me money. ended up costing me way more in time and headaches than just paying for a VPN sub.

different angle: I ran a VPS for like 6 months, spent maybe 10 hours just tweaking WireGuard, updates, security patches, all that. ended up costing me around 50 bucks in time and headaches, while a VPN sub was 80 bucks a year and just worked. sometimes saving a few bucks on a VPS just ain't worth the hassle long term.
