VPN vs proxy - when to pick which?

So many peeps get confused about VPNs and proxies and when to use which. Honestly, it comes down to your needs. VPNs are like your all-in-one security blanket. They encrypt all your traffic, hide your IP and are solid for privacy, streaming, torrenting, whatever. But they can slow down your connection a bit cuz of the encryption overhead. Proxies, on the other hand, are more lightweight and only reroute specific apps or browsers. They don't encrypt, so they're faster but less secure. Good for quick geo-unblocks when you don't wanna lose a ton of speed. If you're just trying to access content in another country, a proxy might do the trick. But if privacy and security are top priority, a VPN is the way to go. Remember, don't just use a free proxy for streaming Netflix, that's asking for trouble lol.

Haha, I gotta say I've had totally different luck. I actually found proxies super sus for quick geo-unblock stuff, they sometimes just don't work right or give weird errors. VPNs can be slow sometimes but I'd rather deal with that than risk my data with sketchy proxies lol.

tbh yeah I hear ya, proxies can be kinda flaky especially with streaming, they just sometimes disconnect or lag out which is annoying. I tried a free one once for Netflix and it worked for like 5 mins then just stopped, not worth the hassle. VPNs might slow down a bit but at least they stick around and keep stuff more secure.

If you care about security, go VPN, but always test different ones if speed drops too much. I once used a free proxy for quick geo-unblock, but it just kept disconnecting during a live stream, lol. ymmv, but I prefer paid VPNs for stability.

smh honestly I dont trust free proxies for anything serious, they always seem sketchy or just don't work right when you need em.

Appreciate all the input, folks, good points about proxies being flaky and VPN speed dips. Yeah, free proxies are risky for streaming, always better to test a paid VPN if u really care about consistent connection. And lol, free proxies during a live stream is asking for trouble, trust me.

spot on. Honestly, if you need solid security and privacy, go with a VPN. I've been using NordVPN - it's pretty reliable and has good speed. Proxies are fine for quick, light tasks but don't rely on them for anything sensitive.

bruh, always check if the proxy supports HTTPS if you want at least some level of encryption. most cheap proxies don't, so your data can still be sniffed even if you think it's safer.

bruh, but like. what if u just need to unblock some sites quick and not care bout security? do u think a proxy can do that good enough or is it always VPN for that kinda stuff?

Different angle: sometimes people forget that proxies can be super handy for quick site unblocking, especially if you don't care about security. But if you rn need privacy and encryption, VPN is the way to go. It all depends

Last month i had to unblock a site fast, so i used a proxy. it did the job, but then i saw a report that like 70% of free proxies don't support HTTPS, so your data's basically exposed if you're not careful. VPNs usually encrypt everything, and most reliable ones support AES-256 encryption which is like bank level. so

last month i used a proxy to quickly unblock a site, but then i found out most free ones don't support HTTPS, so data was kinda exposed. 2) switched to a vpn after that for
