VPN speed tests are a joke right now

Man I swear these speed tests are trash lately. Tried to find a decent VPN for streaming and torrenting and the numbers are all over the place. Ran like 3 tests on the same VPN with different servers and got results that make no sense. Sometimes it's blazing fast, then next test it's crawling. Protocols? Yeah I tried OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2 all over the place. And don't get me started on privacy - some say they're no logs but I doubt it. Honestly I'm about to give up and just self-host my own VPN but that's a whole headache. If anyone's got a real way to test this stuff or actual reliable results I'd love some tips, I'm seriously about to lose it. Feels like these providers just throw random numbers to look good. smh

bruh honestly I get it, self-hosting can be more trouble than its worth sometimes lol but at least u know what's goin on with ur own setup.

yo different angle: I stopped trusting speed tests completely, I just check if streaming works smooth or not. Sometimes fast is slow for me with buffers. U gotta test with real use cases rather than just numbers

different angle: maybe those tests are just garbage rn. real world tests like streaming or torrenting might tell u more. speed tests seem more like a meme now.

You really think there's a legit way to get reliable VPN speed results rn? Honestly most speed tests just seem like a game now, not real indicators of how well it performs for streaming or torrents. I'd say just test it with actual use cases and see how it feels, that's probably more real than some random number.

Different angle: Have you ever thought about testing VPN speeds at different times of day? Sometimes it's not the VPN itself but network congestion or server load messing with the results. Might be worth trying a few different times and servers to get a clearer picture.

honestly honestly, I think the whole VPN speed test thing is kinda pointless right now. Servers are slammed, ISPs are always messing with traffic and it feels like just throwing darts blindfolded. Sometimes I just wanna say screw it and go with what feels faster in real use. This testing obsession is kinda overkill

Ever tried running the tests on a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi? That can sometimes give more consistent results, even when VPN speeds are sus. Have you noticed if specific servers or locations are more reliable than others?

I'd say around 80% of the VPN speed tests I've run lately are totally off. The main tip I'd give is to test during off-peak hours, like late at night or early mornings. VPNs tend to get bogged down during peak times, so those tests are kinda pointless.

just my 2 cents: totally agree the speed tests lately seem unreliable, especially during peak hours VPN servers get hammered and speeds tank hard. I usually run my tests late at night or early mornings to get a better read. ymmv but the inconsistency is pretty wild right now

Haha, yeah, testing VPN speeds is like trying to hit a moving target. One day it's blazing, next day it's crawling and you're just left scratching your head. I swear I've seen speed tests drop 50% just because I was testing at noon instead of late night.

If you really wanna get a legit idea of VPN speed, forget the tests altogether and just do a simple download test from a fast server, like a big file from a cloud provider. Speed tests are soooo hit or miss with all the load balancing and routing magic. ymmv but I find direct downloads give a more real-world sense of what you're getting.
