VPN protocols for gaming, do they really affect ping?

ok so ppl keep saying wireguard is faster and better for gaming but does it actually lower ping? iirc openvpn or ikev2 can be just as good maybe even better. i'm skeptical cuz i tried wireguard and didn't really see a difference in my ping, like a couple ms but nothing you'd actually notice. is the protocol that important or is it just hype tbh. anyone actually have real speed tests or is everyone just guessing? genuinely wanna know if switching makes any real difference for gaming

careful with the hype, protocols really don't make a huge difference in ping unless your baseline is garbage to start with, i tested wireguard, openvpn, iKev2 myself and saw like 1-2 ms difference max which is pointless for gaming. unless your isp is trash or you're far from the server it's mostly about connection stability not protocol choice

Disagree, protocol choice can matter but mostly in theory. I've run tests with different protocols and saw 1-3 ms max difference on a good connection. If your ping is already in the 20s or 30s, switching protocols won't magically drop it to single digits. It's more about stability and packet loss than raw speed.

bruh, exactly, if your baseline is solid like 15-20 ms, swapping protocols rn ain't gonna drop it 10 ms or smth. tested myself too, it's barely noticeable unless ur connection is already trash. like, 1-2 ms difference ain't worth the hassle unless you got some kinda weird setup

careful with thinking protocols are some magic fix. i've tried a bunch, saw tiny ms differences but honestly it's mostly placebo unless ur ping is super high to start. if ur in the 20s or 30s, changing protocols ain't gonna turn that into a solid 10 ms drop. afaik, the main thing is ur base connection, not some protocol

been messing with VPN protocols 3 years now. honestly, the difference is so minimal unless ur ping is super high to start. I use a tool called Speedify, it auto switches between protocols for best speed and stability, helps keep ping stable especially when gaming. If ur ping is already decent, swapping protocols won't do much.

nah, i disagree, the protocol itself isn't the, more about the quality of the connection and routing. i'd check out a tool called Speedify, it actually switches protocols on the fly to get the best ping, so u don't gotta guess if one is better. most of the time the difference is so tiny u won't feel it unless ur already at crazy high ping.

i played around with VPN protocols for years. honestly, i saw maybe a 1-2ms difference max, which is practically useless for gaming. it's more about your routing and connection stability than the protocol itself.

yep exactly, it's mostly hype. I've tested tons of protocols and the real difference is so tiny unless ur starting with high ping. routing and connection quality matter way more. protocols like wireguard are cool but don't expect game-changing ping drops.

Yup exactly, the protocol itself isn't the main deal, but I think you're underestimating a bit. It can make a difference if ur connection is dodgy or if u switch to something more stable and optimized, especially with lower cpm or better routing. So yeah, for casual gaming, maybe not huge but if ur setup is crap, better protocols can help a little.

Last month I switched to a VPN with a built-in speed optimizer called ExitLag and honestly it made a noticeable difference on some games, so I kinda believe that setup quality matters more than the protocol itself sometimes.

appreciate the insights fam, makes sense that if your baseline is good, switching protocols won't do much. i guess the hype about wireguard being faster is just that, hype. gonna keep my focus on stable internet and maybe less on protocols. thanks again for the real tests.
