VPN Protocols - Are they really that important for speed and privacy?

man i just wasted so much time testing vpn protocols for streaming and torrenting. everyone says wireguard is the fastest and most private but tbh i got better speeds with openvpn sometimes. now i'm wondering if i should just go with the proven ones for privacy like ikev2/ipsec or even pptp for old stuff. protocols are important but the hype feels overblown tbh. can anyone tell me which protocols actually matter right now or is it all just marketing? trying to decide if i should wait for a black friday deal or just stick with what i have.

Last month I tested a bunch for streaming and found openvpn actually played decent, so yeah, protocols matter less than you think, just pick what works best for your setup.

Different angle: honestly, a lot of the protocol hype is just that, hype. what really matters is how the VPN is configured and the server's quality. even the fastest protocol won't save you if the server is overloaded or poorly managed. so my advice is to focus more on the provider's reputation and server stability rather than obsessing over protocols. ymmv tho, but that's what I found through my own testing.

tbh lol true, but do you think the protocol really makes a difference if the VPN logs or not matter more?

disagree a bit, protocols do matter for speed but also for stability, especially if ur streaming or torrenting. a quick tip - test with a vpn speed test tool and see which protocol hits the sweet spot for u, then stick with that. don't just go for hype, test real-world speeds.

Careful with thinking protocol choice is all about speed and privacy. In my experience, other factors like server location and server load can matter way more. Protocols do help, but they're not the only thing that affects overall VPN performance or security

Honestly, I think most ppl underestimate how much the protocol impacts speed, especially when u compare OpenVPN to WireGuard. WireGuard can give u up to 50% faster speeds in some tests, plus its security model is simpler so less chance of leaks. Sure, server location matters, but if ur protocol is trash, ur speed and privacy take a hit rn.

switching to WireGuard if u care about speed can be legit. It's usually faster and lighter than OpenVPN, plus it still keeps decent privacy. U might wanna test both and see which feels snappier for u.

Different angle: I kinda disagree, at least in my own tests, the protocol makes a difference but not as much as u think. Sometimes server choice or even your own connection speed hits way harder. ngl, I switch protocols often but not always notice a huge diff unless it's really slow or overloaded.

tbh bruh, i doubt protocol alone makes that much difference if ur on a crap server or bad connection. try switching servers first, then see if changing protocols really helps.

man yo thanks for the input bruh, i get what u saying about server location and load but dont sleep on protocols either, wireguard really does seem faster and simpler. def worth testing both, see what works best for u. privacy wise, they all got their pros and cons, so depends on ur needs

been doing this 3 years, and honestly i switched protocols a bunch of times for faster speeds but never noticed much difference in privacy. sometimes the best speeds came from the default options, so imo it's kinda overhyped.

VPN Protocols - Are they really that important for speed and privacy? I used to think they mattered a lot but honestly after years of testing I realized most times the default is good enough. Unless you're doing something super sensitive, protocol choice rarely makes a huge difference.

Honestly I think the protocol matters way less than most ppl assume, especially for everyday use. Do you think users really notice the difference between OpenVPN and WireGuard in real-world scenarios or is it just theory?

VPN Protocols - Are they really that important for speed and privacy? I think in most cases, users don't notice a huge diff unless you're doing something super sensitive or need max speed fr. But still, some protocols like WireGuard are legit faster and leaner, so worth messing with if you wanna squeeze every bit of performance. Do you guys test different protocols often or just stick with default?

Yup, pretty much. But isn't it kinda funny how folks still get all hyped over switching protocols when most don't even need that level of privacy or speed? Ymmv, but I'd bet most people just stick to whatever comes default and call

I gotta disagree a little, just because the protocol can matter more than most folks think. Yeah, most casual users won't notice the difference day to day but when you start getting into sensitive stuff or want the best privacy it's not just about speed. Some protocols really do offer better encryption or less logs and that tf matters if you're trying to stay low-key.
