VPN on router vs VPN app - found what actually works

so I tried both and yeah the difference is crazy. having VPN on the router is nice cause everything's covered but man the speed drops and sometimes I gotta reboot the whole thing when it acts up. app on phone or pc? way faster, more control, but it only covers that one device unless you set up each one manually. protocols? i use wireguard for speed mostly, openVPN still seems good for privacy tho. tbh for streaming or torrenting the app is better, but for my whole house network router VPN is just easier. anyone else try both setups? what do you think about keeping it stable and private

I saw somewhere that like 60% of people say their router VPN drops connection a lot. I tried both too and yeah, the speed hit on router VPN is real. I just stuck with app VPN for my PC and phone, more stable and faster for me but setting up on every device sucks.

You might wanna try a dual setup where you keep the router VPN on for general browsing but use the app for high-speed stuff or privacy sensitive tasks, that way you kinda get best of both worlds without sacrificing speed or security totally.

why not use the router for torrenting and streaming then turn it off or switch to app for private browsing? would that give you more control?

Haha, sounds simple but not always practical in real life, unless you got some fancy scripting skills. Most ppl just wanna hit one button and go, switching manually gets annoying fast.

last year I tried scripting to switch VPNs on the fly, lol, ended up more headache than it's worth. Most ppl just want it seamless without messing around, so yeah, gotta keep it simple or forget it.

been doing this 3 years and fr, that's exactly my struggle. apps are way faster but router VPN is just less hassle, till it acts up again. wish I could find some perfect middle ground bruh.

i dunno man, i think the router vpn is more about convenience than actual privacy or stability. the app always feels more reliable even tho it's only on one device. ever try using split tunneling with the app to kinda get best of both worlds?

just my 2 cents: if stability is your main concern, try setting up split tunneling on the app so you can keep certain apps or sites outside the VPN, it might save your speed and reduce the reboot chaos.

ever try tweaking your router firmware or switching to a lighter VPN protocol? I had similar issues but swapped to a custom firmware like OpenWRT or DD-WRT, and my speed and stability improved 30-40%.

lol true, but the router VPN just feels like a big sacrifice in speed and stability for that convenience. ever thought about balancing both? like keeping VPN on router for general stuff but switching to app for high speed or privacy needs?

been doing this 3 years and honestly switching between protocols on the router might help. u could try setting up a dedicated VPN profile with a lighter protocol like Wireguard for daily use and switch to OpenVPN only when u need max privacy. might keep things more stable without sacrificing too muuuch speed.

ever tried split tunneling with the VPN app? It's a for avoiding slowdowns on your main device while still routing certain traffic. Router VPN can lag, but apps with split tunneling give you more

Ever actually tried a VPN on a dedicated device or a cheap mini PC behind ur router? Can help with performance and not slow down ur main device. Just some food for thought.

tbh spot on, but i tried split tunneling with VPN app and still saw slowdowns on my main device. a dedicated device behind the router actually made things worse for me, not better. sometimes simplicity is key, no need for extra boxes.

yo different angle: I tried VPN on router and it totally killed my WiFi speed, ended up just using the VPN app on my phone and it's way smoother, no lag.

If you want minimal lag and easier setup, try using WireGuard with a good router like the Asus RT-AX88U. I've found it less painful than messing with apps or dedicated devices. Just keep in mind, ymmv depending on your ISP and network setup.

sounds like a classic case of "which one causes less pain" lol, gotta pick your poison. sometimes the simplest route is the best, no need to overcomplicate it.

spot on. I learned that too the hard way, some ISPs just don't play nice with VPNs on router, lotta lag or disconnects. ever tried pairing a VPN on router with a VPN app rn?

spot on. I actually tried setting up a VPN on my router and spent hours chasing down connection drops, turned out my ISP was blocking some ports. never again lol.
