VPN on router vs VPN app - found what actually works

Last month I tried putting VPN on my router and gave up after a week cause my speeds tanked and I kept dropping connections, turned out my ISP was throttling some VPN ports. ended up just using a VPN app on my device and that worked way smoother for me. anyone else had ISP block VPN traffic on routers?
