VPN for travel - accessing content abroad

So I've been messing around with a VPN lately for when I travel and wanna watch stuff back home or access regional sites. Tried a couple but man it's a mess sometimes. Speed drops hard, servers get crowded, or the connection just cuts out mid-show. Protocol-wise I stick to WireGuard mostly, but even that can be weird on mobile. Privacy's a concern too, I wanna avoid any laggy streams or weird data leaks. Anyone got a fave for reliable streaming and decent speed? Or maybe a trick to get around geo-blocks without sacrificing too much speed? Ymmv but I swear some services just work better abroad, while others are kinda useless outside the US or Europe.

Been doing this 3 years and yep, mobile WireGuard can be flaky sometimes. I switched to NordVPN for a while and found their app more stable on the go, plus decent speeds. The trick is to test a few providers with good mobile reviews and see which works

man honestly I think a lot of times it's just the local network that messes with WireGuard on mobile, have you tried switching to a different mobile network or using a wired connection if possible?

Honestly, split tunneling can be a lifesaver for this. You route just your streaming traffic thru the VPN, so the rest of your internet stays fast and stable. kinda feels like cheating the system but it works.

I dunno, I think people overestimate how much VPNs actually help with geo-blocks sometimes. Like yeah, they can trick the system but a lot of times the service just detects VPNs or they have their own proxies now. I'd rather just find legit streaming sites that work abroad than mess with all these workarounds that slow everything down or cause leaks.

Different angle: ever tried using smart DNS instead of a VPN? It's not about hiding your IP but rerouting just the DNS stuff so you get faster access without messing with your speeds too much. Might not work for every service but for streaming, it can be a smoother ride

do people actually get decent speed with smart DNS tho? heard some say it's faster but then again, does it really unblock stuff reliably or just work sometimes?

Around 70% of users say they see a speed boost with smart DNS but only about 50% report reliable unblocking, so it's kinda hit or miss depending on the service and region. Plus, smart DNS doesn't encrypt data, so privacy's still a grey area if you're worried about leaks.

honestly 44% of ppl report slowdown and disconnects with VPNs abroad, lol. like, it's not just you, that stuff is common. honestly, i dunno if smart DNS is any better, just less secure but maybe faster? smh, not sure there's a perfect fix, especially with regional quirks.

tbh bruh, you said 'man' but then said 'or maybe a trick to get around geo-blocks' like, isn't that kinda the same thing? lol, sounds like you're just overthinking it.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I'll give split tunneling a shot, sounds kinda like what I need. Yeah, mobile VPNs can be dodgy sometimes, might switch around or try different networks. Appreciate the input, ymmv but it's good to hear what's worked for others
