Back in the day, like 5-6 years ago, I remember plugging in VPNs just to get around geo restrictions or improve privacy but not really thinking about ping or lag. Now, after testing a bunch of VPNs for gaming, I gotta say, the numbers are kinda wild. I did some speed tests on a few popular ones, like NordVPN, Express, and Surfshark. Without VPN, my ping was around 30ms on average. With NordVPN on a US server, it jumped to like 50ms, but on a UK server, it stayed kinda the same. Interestingly, with some servers, I saw ping drop to 25ms, which is even better than no VPN. The weird thing is, some VPNs actually decreased ping sometimes, depending on the server load and route. Protocol matters too - WireGuard generally gave me more consistent results, sometimes even 5-10ms lower than OpenVPN. So, I think the myth that VPNs always increase ping might be kinda false, or at least it's not the full story. Curious if anyone else has real numbers or weird results like this?
 
VPNs can actually lower ping if your route is bad or congested, but mostly they add delay. WireGuard's a, yeah, more stable and sometimes even better than no VPN. Just gotta test different servers and protocols, every network's different
 
Been doing this 3 years, and yeah, sometimes VPNs surprisingly lower ping if the route is trashed or congested. Switched to WireGuard on some servers and noticed more stable and even faster ping. Weird
 
Haha yeah, no kidding bruh. Some days it feels like chasing the perfect server is like finding a needle in a haystack. Just gotta keep swapping until it clicks.
 
just my 2 cents: always test multiple servers, even those that seem weird. sometimes a US server can be faster than a local one if the route is trash. also, switching protocols like WireGuard can seriously improve stability and ping.
 
35ms is not uncommon, but here's a thing - always test your local VPN server at different times of day. routing congestion shifts fast and can change your ping big time. sometimes a server that's trash in the morning might be gold at night. stick with a routine of testing at least twice daily.
 
haha yeah, VPN ping roulette is real. Sometimes it's just luck with the route, not the VPN itself. Protocol switching can be your best friend or enemy
 
yo do you notice any difference in gameplay smoothness or just ping numbers? sometimes the ping looks good but the game still feels laggy, idk if its just routing or what.
 
Been doing this 8 years now and honestly, ping with VPNs can be super weird. sometimes it's better, sometimes worse, just depends on the route and server load. I agree that protocol choice makes a big difference, WireGuard usually gives me more stable results. ymmv but yeah, not always a straight increase in ping, more like a gamble sometimes.
 
last month i tried a VPN for gaming, and it did cut my ping a bit but not by much. sometimes it helped if i was routing through a bad node, but other times it made things worse. so yeah, it can help but not a guarantee itll cut ping consistently.
 
actually i think vpn can sometimes cut ping by like 10-20 ms if u pick the right server. but most of the time it adds extra latency cause ur routing through extra nodes. so depends on ur provider and game server location tbh
 
Actually, VPN can cut ping if u find a server close to ur gaming server and its not congested. but most times it just adds latency cause u go through extra nodes. best to test different servers and see what works, lol.
 
ur experiences guys, really helps. i get what u mean, finding a close and not congested server is key. im gonna try that and test different options, see if it helps my ping or not. kinda surprised it can go both ways tho, guess it's all about trial and error.
