VPN for China - need reliable suggestions

Been running VPNs since dial-up days so I know the usual stuff but China is a different beast. They have advanced DPI and actively block protocols, WireGuard gets killed fast there. OpenVPN with obfuscation sometimes works but the speeds are trash. Need suggestions from anyone who's actually been there recently or runs connections into China consistently. What provider or setup still connects reliably in 2025. I tried a few big names last year and it was chaos, servers would work for a week then get blocked. Self-hosted on a VPS in nearby regions like Japan or Taiwan seems more stable but you gotta configure it right. Anyone doing that? What protocols and ports are you using? btw streaming is secondary, just need basic access for email and messaging without getting disconnected every hour. Ymmv obviously but looking for real current experiences not marketing claims. Budget isn't a big issue if it actually works.
 
bruh, I got a buddy who swears by a mix of shadowsocks and v2ray configs on obscure ports, kinda like a moving target game. imo, self-hosted with random obfs proxies on different ports keeps it a bit less obvious. sometimes you gotta switch it up daily just to stay ahead
 
OpenVPN with steganography plugin still holds up, imo, if you pick a decent port and rotate configs often. some providers bundle this kinda setup in their stealth plans, might be worth a shot if you want less hassle than self-hosting. honestly, it's still a cat and mouse game tho, so keep testing different configs.

bruh, yeah, self-hosting is legit but lol, configuring that right is a whole new level. kinda feels like a full-time job sometimes.
 
nah, i think a lot of people overestimate the need for complex setups. try changing your obfs settings or ports weekly, that alone can keep you ahead of blocks for a bit longer. always gotta stay unpredictable.
 
Been doing this 4 years and yeah, switching ports and obfs does help for a bit but man, it's a constant cat and mouse game. sometimes you gotta get real crafty, like spinning up fresh VPSs and switching up configs like daily. no silver bullet, just gotta stay flexible and adapt fast.
 
just my 2 cents, maybe try using different ports for OpenVPN or even switching to TCP instead of UDP, sometimes that makes a difference; also, keep an eye on obfs settings and rotate servers frequently, YMMV but staying unpredictable helps.
 
Make sure you pick a VPN with obfuscation tech, not all do. Also, check recent reviews, some VPNs work fine for a while then get blocked.
 
different angle: ever tried a VPN that uses multiple servers or switches IPs automatically? it kinda helps dodge blocks more consistently. also, some VPNs can be sketchy about logging, so check that too.

Haha, classic move, bookmarking everything lol. I did the same thing when I found ExpressVPN works kinda steady even in China, no drama with the IPs or connection drops. Just wish I had it back when I first got stuck in that VPN limbo
