vpn extension vs app - i'm actually shocked it works this well?

okay so i was messing around with nordvpn's chrome extension (mostly just to get around the geo-block on some site (nothing major)) and ngl the speed difference is actually crazy? 1) the extension connects like instantly 2) pages load basically at my normal speed 3) the full app on my pc takes like 10 seconds and sometimes cuts my speed in half. so my question is. for specific stuff like just unblocking a website quickly (or maybe logging into a geo-restricted web app), is there any real reason not to just use the extension? like afaik it's still encrypting traffic from the browser (right?). tbh i'm kinda excited cause this might be my new default for light use.

Different angle: sure, the extension is snappy but don't forget it's still just a browser proxy, not a full VPN tunnel. imo, for quick geo-unblock stuff it's fine, but if you start doing anything sensitive or want more security, the full app's still the way to go. speed is tempting but don't get lazy with encryption and privacy

Encrypting traffic in a browser extension can be flaky, so don't assume it's as secure as the full app. If privacy matters, always check if the extension is actually encrypting everything or just routing traffic. Lol

careful with assuming the extension encrypts all your traffic, it mostly just routes browser traffic. if you care about full device privacy, the app is still king. for quick geo-unblock, extension is fine but don't rely on it for anything sensitive.

Different angle: I had a similar experience, but I noticed that some extensions only route browser traffic and don't encrypt all your device data. NordVPN claims their extension encrypts browser traffic, but in tests, some leaks still happen if u run multiple tabs or apps. the full app is way more reliable for privacy since it encrypts everything, not just the browser. u wanna keep stuff secure, stick with the full app for sensitive stuff.

yo honestly, I tried something similar a while back. I found the extension was super handy for quick geo-unblock stuff but it's not a full replacement if you're concerned about privacy or encryption beyond just the browser. So yeah, for light use and quick hops it's fine, but if you're doing anything sensitive, the app's still safer imo.

careful with assuming the extension encrypts all your traffic, most just route browser traffic, not everything on your device. if you wanna keep full privacy, the app is still the move.

yo been doing this 11 years, and honestly for quick geo stuff the extension is fine but always remember it probably only routes browser traffic not your whole device, so if privacy is a concern, stick with the app.

careful with assuming the extension encrypts all your traffic, usually it just routes your browser and maybe some app traffic but not your entire device so if you wanna keep full privacy and security the full app is still your best bet. also, quick geo unblock stuff is handy but don't forget sometimes those extensions can leak your real IP if not configured right or if there's a bug.

Just my 2 cents, for quick stuff like that the extension is fine but don't forget it's mainly routing your browser traffic. If you wanna be safer, consider using a split-tunnel setup or a local VPN rule to keep just the specific tab or site encrypted instead of the whole device. ymmv though.

ok so spot on, i've been using the extension for quick geo unblocking too, and honestly it's pretty solid for light stuff. speed is way better and it's just easier to toggle on-off. but yeah, don't rely on it for total privacy or to

been using VPNs for years, and honestly i stopped using the full app for quick stuff too. like a while back i just used the chrome extension to bypass geo stuff, and it was fine as long as u know it only routes browser traffic. speed was way better, and i think for just logging in or quick checks it's legit. just don't forget, it's not protecting ur whole device like the app does.

thx for the tips guys, yeah i get what you mean about the extension being just a browser proxy and not a full vpn tunnel. ngl i didn't think about the security flaky-ness, so i'll keep that in mind. for quick geo-unblock stuff, i think i'm just gonna stick with the extension for now but keep the full app in mind if i start doing anything more serious. appreciate the heads up!
