Tool review: free backlink analyzers - are any actually good?

tbh been in this space 2 years and i still can't believe people pay hundreds a month for ahrefs or semrush for basic backlink checks. i mean maybe for the full suite yeah but for just checking what links a competitor has? feels insane. atm im running a test where i manually pulled the backlink profile for a local client's site using like 4 different free tools and google sheets, then compared it to an ahrefs snapshot i got from a friend. the results are sorta surprising. like some of these free tools are pulling in like 60-70% of the same referring domains. the quality is hit or miss obviously, they miss a ton of the nofollow links and the anchor text data is garbage. but if you're just starting out and wanna see where your main competitor is getting their links from, you can get a decent picture without spending a dime. ngl tho the biggest headache is the rate limits and the captchas. one tool i tried, you can do like 3 searches a day then it just locks you out. another one gave me a list of like 200 domains but half were 404s or just irrelevant directories from 2010. my main question is has anyone actually found a free backlink checker they'd rely on for a quick gut check? or is the data so bad it's not even worth the time setting up the api calls and cleaning the csv exports. idk maybe i'm just being cheap but ive seen too many beginners blow their budget on tools before they even know how to build a single link.

that's actually a smart move, lol. I did something similar last month pulling 3 free tools, and I got around 65% overlap with SEMrush data. The thing is, most free tools max out at 1000 backlinks, so you gotta be careful with big sites. For quick checks, it works, but don't expect accuracy for serious campaigns.

just my 2 cents, totally agree. for quick gut checks, they're okay, but if you wanna get serious, you're still better off with paid tools or at least cross-referencing with a few different sources. can't beat the data quality for actual link building.

just my 2 cents, those free tools are sus but they can give u a rough idea if u're not budgeted for paid. the problem is most miss a lot of nofollow links and anchor data, so don't rely on them for deep analysis. best to cross-check with a paid tool if u can, but for quick checks they're not totally

honestly are you sure you're not overestimating what those free tools can do? I mean, even with 60-70% overlap, that still leaves a lot unaccounted for. Maybe it's better to see their limits as a quick snapshot rather than reliable data. Last month I tried using Ubersuggest for a quick backlink check. kinda similar issues, accuracy was meh but enough to get a rough idea. honestly, for small scale, it's not terrible if you're aware of the limits.

Haha, yeah maybe some are not completely useless but if you've used enough of em you know most are just kinda meh. Like, they might show a few backlinks but miss a lot of the good ones or just be outdated quick. afaik, they're only good for a quick glance but if you serious about backlinks, you need something more solid.

If you really wanna get serious, investing in paid tools like ahrefs or semrush is definitely the way to go. But for quick checks, some of the decent free ones can do the job, just don't rely on them 100%.
