self-hosted vps + wireguard guide (stop using the bad ones)

tbh tired of seeing ppl mess up self-hosted vpns. everyone parrots the same digital ocean tutorial and then wonders why their ips get blocked (or worse). ngl if you're gonna self-host, you gotta know the basics. 1) vps choice matters, not all are privacy-friendly (looking at you, aws). 2) wireguard config is simple but ppl leave ports open or skip firewall rules. 3) you're now the vpn provider, so logging/dns is on you (afaik). i can walk thru a minimal setup that actually works for streaming/torrenting without getting flagged. who wants the real steps, not just 'install wireguard'?

bruh, totally with you, most people just copy-paste and then wonder why their IPs get blocked, like hello, learn the basics first.

honestly you think most folks actually understand what they're doing before messing with self-hosted VPNs? Or they just wing it and hope for the best?

bruh, honestly i think a lot of ppl do know some basics but just mess up on details like firewall or port stuff, it's not always just copy-paste. a lot of folks just skip the hard parts and get caught out

just my 2 cents, but most ppl seriously underestimate how many little details matter and end up cocking it up. they think installing wireguard and opening a port is enough, but then wonder why their IPs get flagged or logs are everywhere. gotta be real about the knowledge gap before diving in.

yo, appreciate the props guys, ngl. +1 on the winging it part, that's how most mess up. and yeah, people forget dns logs, that's the kinda stuff that gets u flagged quick. if u got more questions or tips, drop 'em, happy to keep it real.

Try vultr or hetzner, both pretty reliable with wireguard and cheap. Had bad experiences with some US hosts, like OVH kinda flaky sometimes lol. ymmv but those 2 usually smooth sailing for me. Lmao, always chasing the perfect setup

ngl bruh, yeah same here, vultr and hetzner usually chill but I've seen some flaky stuff pop up on random US hosts, so ymmv. gotta keep testing till you find the sweet spot.

100%, I'd say like 70% of the cheap US hosts I tested had weird IP leaks or connection drops, so gotta really vet those. Have you found any specific configs that work better on those flaky ones or just stick to EU hosts?

try setting up a wireguard config with a dedicated DNS like cloudflare or quad9, helps avoid leaks and connection issues on flaky hosts. also, always do a quick leak test after setup to catch probs early. smh how many cheap hosts are still leaky lol.

Nah, I think people overhype the "bad hosts." I've been using OVH and Scaleway for a while, never had major issues, just gotta tweak configs right. Once I set up my own DNS and added a few kill switches, it's solid rn. Most probs come from poor setup, not the host.

Have you ever considered that even with good configs, some hosts just might have hardware issues or network policies that cause leaks or drops? How do you troubleshoot those kinda deep-rooted problems?

different angle: rn I had a bad time with a "solid" host, thought it was just me messing up configs. turned out their network was flaky and hardware was aging. learned the hard way that even with configs right, some hosts just ain't reliable long-term. always do a real-world test over a couple days before fully trusting.

Always test with a fresh install and monitor traffic, once I thought my config was perfect but it kept disconnecting at night turned out the host's network was dropping packets randomly.
