Self-hosted VPN with WireGuard on a VPS speed test update

tbh i posted before about messing around with self-hosted vpns and i finally set up a wireguard server on a vps just to see if it was worth it. thought it'd be annoying but its actually pretty straightforward if you know linux. ran some speed tests, results were surprising. download speeds were like 300-400 mbps on my 1 gbps plan which is decent i guess since im running it from my basement closet. latency was low too, around 20-30ms, good for gaming or streaming. wireguard feels snappy, no weird hiccups and setup was minimal compared to openvpn. privacy wise i control everything so no logs or data selling worries but gotta keep the vps secure otherwise im just trusting some box in a data center. curious if anyone else tried this or has tips to boost speed or privacy, like different vps providers or configs. is diy even worth it over just buying a premium one? seems like effort but kinda satisfying if you like tinkering

Been doing this 5+ years and I gotta say I never saw 20-30ms latency with my setups. More like 50-70ms usually, depending on the VPS location and quality. Sure, you can tweak configs for slightly better, but if you're hitting that low with your basement setup, that's pretty solid. Most VPSs I've used run around 40-60ms for me, so props if

lol, tinkering is kinda addictive, huh? try pi-hole if privacy matters, blocks ads and trackers at DNS level. makes ur whole network more private without extra effort.

yep totally agree, I switched from openvpn a while ago and was surprised how smooth wireguard felt, especially with less fuss on setup and fewer weird issues

tbh i dunno, I think it depends, using Pi-hole is a nice add-on but if you're worried about privacy, a VPN alone doesn't cover everything. Plus, setting up DNS blocking adds more complexity, which some might not wanna bother with. Privacy's a mix of stuff, not just one tool. Keep tinkering, tho, it's fun to learn. Stay curious, my friend

Haha, sounds like you're one of those Linux folks who actually enjoys tinkering. I'll admit, once you get it working, it's kinda satisfying to have control, but yeah, the setup can feel annoying if you're not used to it.

man speed from basement to 1gbps plan? that's wild. I run wireguard on a cheap VPS and get like 250-300 mbps, but I think it's more about the provider's network than the config.

i call bs on the "surprising" part, if you're running a decent VPS and have a good connection, speeds should be predictable. my tip: tune your MTU settings, sometimes dropping it from default 1500 to 1400 or 1380 can improve speeds and stability. that tweak saved me from weird lag spikes. keep it real.

lol yeah MTU tuning is underrated, smh. you got any specific vps providers you found that help squeeze out more speed or privacy? ymmv but I've seen some ppl get better results with cloud providers like Hetzner or Linode for self-hosted VPNs.

just my 2 cents, those speeds are pretty solid given the setup. probably not much you can do to boost it much more without dedicated hardware or better VPS, but tuning MTU and checking for packet loss might help. keep it simple if it works for your needs.

huh yeah same here, thought setting up wireguard would be a pain but then I did it on a Sunday afternoon and was surprised how easy it was. like, no extra software, just some configs and it worked. speeds were similar, around 350 mbps on my

thanks for the tips guys, really appreciate the input. pi-hole sounds dope, might try it since privacy is kinda my thing. yeah the latency thing is weird, maybe different VPS locations or configs help? still impressed with wireguard overall, just gotta stay vigilant on security.
