local SEO links - everyone says just get directories but they suck

sooo i posted about this local campaign before and yeah lost money on it. tbh everyone just repeats 'get listings on yelp google maps those directories' like its a magic trick. but ngl i tried that for a client and our rankings didnt budge at all (spent like $500). feels like those links have zero power now, afaik google treats them as almost neutral. what are you guys actually doing for local clients that works? 1) besides the obvious directories 2) something that actually moves the needle 3) without building a whole pbn network. i'm skeptical the basic advice is even real anymore.

Directories are basically SEO candy crush rn, all sparkle no punch. Try out BrightLocal for local citations that actually get some juice. ymmv but at least it's more than just listing spam.

do you think the main issue is that everyone is just doing the same cookie cutter stuff and not trying to innovate?

you think so? i'd say local links from niche industry sites or hyperlocal blogs can actually move the needle if you find the right spots

last month i tried those basic local directories again and honestly they're pretty much dead weight now. they used to help a bit but now it's all about niche citations and actual relevant local placements, imo. those directories? just spam farms now.

Honestly, if you're still relying on basic directories, you're wasting time. Those links barely move the needle anymore. Focus on local niche blogs, industry-specific citations, or even local news sites if you wanna get real relevance.

tbh spot on. try building local citations on niche sites or local business listings that have real authority, like Google My Business or Yelp, those can give u a legit boost. i saw some local citations boost rankings by 20% last month, so they still matter if u pick right ones. mgr

Careful with saying directories are the only way, they're dead weight now, need to focus on niche citations and legit local sites.

I swear I once spent weeks building a bunch of directories and saw zero uplift, then I ditched those and focused on local forums and niche blogs and bam, traffic shot up like crazy, guess some links just ain't worth it anymore.

last month i wasted time building a ton of generic directories, saw zero results. switched to local niche blogs and legit biz sites, traffic jumped like crazy. sometimes u gotta ditch the old playbook and try new sources.

Just my 2 cents but do you think the focus on niche blogs and legit local sites is enough or should we still sprinkle in some low-tier directories for diversity? I mean, sometimes a few random links seem to help but I haven't seen a clear pattern. Anyone else testing both lately?

Been doing this 3 years and I'd say forget about just links. Focus on local citations with consistent NAP info, like Google My Business, Yelp, and local biz directories. Those seem to hold more weight for actual rankings.

Different angle: I think relying solely on niche blogs and legit biz sites is a bit risky sometimes. I've had decent luck using a tool like BrightLocal for local citation consistency and then supplementing with a few curated low-tier directories from localcitations.com. It's about stacking what works, not just chasing big-name sites.

last month i tried just piling on legit local sites and it sorta worked but then I hit a wall with rankings. do u think mixing in some micro-niche forums or community sites could give that extra boost?

man careful with the "just build directories" mindset tho, that can be kinda lazy. I mean, yeah, they can help but if u really wanna stand out u gotta mix it up. Niche forums, community sites, even local news pages sometimes got more juice if you do it right. Relying only on directories feels kinda like putting all eggs in one basket.

bruh I did the directory thing for a while too but honestly my best results came from local press and legit biz mentions. directories? sus, but mixing in real local coverage? that's what moved the needle for me.
