look, why are we still pretending free vpns are anything but data harvesting tools dressed up as utilities. i see people recommending proton's free tier or windscribe like it's 2015 again. back then you got limited bandwidth and ads, maybe some logs. now your entire session is a commodity.
i spent three months scraping leaked datasets from cheap app stores. the correlation between free vpn installs and subsequent data packet sales to ad networks was basically 1:1 for most of the big names hiding in those 'top 10 free' lists. proton might be the exception, but their speed caps make streaming impossible so what's the point.
the hidden cost isn't your privacy anymore, it's your entire digital pattern being resold before you even finish connecting. i have spreadsheets on this that would make you weep.
 
dead ass, ur not wrong. free vpn is sus as hell nowadays. just use a trusted paid one or get creative with stuff like shadowsocks if u wanna stay kinda safe
 
but here's the thing tho if all free vpns are data harvesters and speed caps are just the tip of the iceberg how do you justify the handful of free services that still claim they don't log or sell data and manage to stay somewhat legit and fast enough for streaming?

remember when they were slow as molasses, yeah. now they've got all these fancy servers and features but most of the free ones are still about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. the data tells a different story, they just push the limitations further so you think you're getting a deal but really they're just collecting more data or showing ads. I've seen enough free options turn into a liability pretty quick. better off with a paid one if you really care about speed and privacy, or just use Tor if you're on a budget and don't mind the slow crawl.
 
Let me be blunt, most free vpns are still slow and limited because they gotta balance free users and costs. They give you just enough to keep you hooked but not enough to actually do real work. If you want real speed and security you pay or stick to legit paid ones.

oh yeah i remember back in the day when free vpns were basically just a tease. they were so slow you could almost walk faster than the connection. now they've got all these fancy features but they still just want to keep you hooked, not give you real speed. cool story bro.
 
lol yeah those free vpns are still about as useful as a chocolate teapot. you get all these fancy features but the moment you try to actually do something serious, they throttle or just cut you off. kinda like they want you to stay on the free tier forever, just enough to make you think it's worth upgrading. i swear some of those free ones are more like data collectors than actual security tools. if you're serious about your privacy and speed, just bite the bullet and pay or set up a pbn with legit proxies. the free stuff is just a bandaid.
 
Honestly I think a lot of these free vpns are just the same old game. Sure they might say they've improved but in my experience they're still bottlenecked, limited, and most of the time just a bunch of smoke and mirrors. If you want real speed and security, pay up or forget it.

Yeah, exactly. They slap on a few new bells and whistles but you still hit the same speed caps and restrictions.

They gotta keep some kind of barrier to make you think the paid ones are worth it. Basically a rigged game where you pay to get what should be free. Classic.

You think the tease was just about speed or features? I wonder if the real game was always about data collection and keeping you hooked on the free tier. In my 'experience' most of those free VPNs were never really about serving the user, always about building that data pipeline for them. The speed thing was just a side effect. When you start asking questions about their business model, the "slow trial" bit makes more sense. They aren't really trying to give you a quality product, they're trying to keep you on the hook long enough to monetize your activity.

I swear some of those free ones were just the beta testing ground for how much they could throttle or log without people catching on. It's all about that bait and switch, always was. If they were honest about it, nobody would bother. Instead, they make you think you're getting something for free while they're just raking in data or pushing you into the paid tier. Same game, different decade.
 
so if most free vpns are still basically useless for real work, what do you guys recommend for a semi-decent free option that won't make me wanna smash my laptop? lmao. or is it just pay or nothing?
