Everybody hypes ExpressVPN speed tests but I'm not buying it

Alright so here's the deal, every site and their mom says ExpressVPN is the fastest. I did some tests this week on my 500mbps line, using WireGuard, tried 3 servers (US, UK, Germany). It was quick but honestly not that much faster than some cheaper ones I tried like Surfshark. We're talking maybe 10% at most in my actual torrenting and streaming tests. And their price is nuts for that tiny difference. Am I missing smth or is the whole 'speed king' thing just really good marketing? My numbers are close enough that other stuff should matter more, like logging policies, how stable the interface is, kill switch actually working which Express has screwed up for me before. Idk maybe my way of testing is off but I'd rather have a steady 350mbps from a $3 service than 400mbps from a $13 one any day. What are you guys seeing?

i ran similar tests last month on a 1gbps line, and honestly, the speed differences between providers were minimal like you said. one time i noticed a 15% boost on one server but overall, it's just noise. i think most of the hype is marketing, not real-world gains. what's your experience with stability and kill switch issues?

Have you tried using Speedtest.net with a local server instead of VPNs for a more real-world gauge? sometimes VPN speed tests are kinda skewed by distance or server load. imo, a steady connection matters more than chasing that tiny speed bump.

bruh, honestly, i think a lot of that stuff is overrated. like, sure, a kill switch not working is annoying but most decent VPNs have it pretty solid these days. stability-wise, if it works most of the time and your connection stays steady, that's what matters more than fancy features. fixating on tiny probs like that usually just overcomplicates things

ngl honestly, I think a lot of the hype around speed is just marketing noise. I tested ExpressVPN last month on a 600mbps line, and yeah, it was fast but not mind-blowingly faster than some cheaper options. Most times I just want stable, predictable speeds and decent privacy, not the highest numbers. ymmv but for torrenting and streaming, I'd rather save a few bucks than chase that extra 10%.

different angle: stability is king but only if it's consistent and not just 'most of the time'. even a tiny hiccup can mess up your flow, so sometimes what looks good on paper isn't enough in real use, lol.

just my 2 cents, yeah, most of that hype is definitely just marketing. people wanna feel like they got the fastest thing so they buy into those claims. ymmv but real world speed isn't usually that dramatic unless you're pushing super high-end gear.

last month i ran some tests on my 1gbps line using WireGuard too and honestly, the speed difference was so tiny i wondered if it was worth the hype. but the mistake in the OP is saying 'their price is nuts for that tiny difference.' that tiny diff can matter for ppl who push the limits but yeah, for most folks, it's just marketing fluff.

Most speed tests I've seen are kinda sketchy tbh but I heard about fast.com from netflix and it's pretty straightforward. Might be worth a shot to compare what you get with what they claim. Keep it chill.

Nah, I gotta disagree. I've used speedtest.net a ton and seen legit differences with ExpressVPN. It's not just hype, their speeds can really vary based on your location and server choice. You gotta test yourself instead of listening to random claims.

I get where you're coming from but honestly, the only way to really know is to test it yourself at different times of day and on different servers. Speed can fluctuate a lot, so one test doesn't tell the whole story. Don't just trust the hype, verify with your own setup.

different angle: I think it's also about what kinda speeds you actually need. If you're doing simple aff stuff and streaming videos, even like 30-50 mbps is usually enough. So even if speed tests show "not great," it might not matter much in real use. But if you're doing big file uploads or gaming, then yeah, you wanna see legit numbers.

Ever actually tested it yourself? I did last week, switched servers a few times during different times of day. Found that speeds could vary a lot, so I started doing speed tests at random times just to get a real idea. Might be worth trying that instead of just trusting hype.

Been doing this 3 years now and I gotta say I've seen enough variability in speed tests to question their real-world relevance. Sure, some servers look fast on paper but when I actually jump on them during peak hours or random times, the speeds can drop pretty hard. I think people tend to get caught up in the hype because they wanna believe VPN providers are delivering the best speeds possible but in reality, it's a lot of smoke and mirrors. ymmv but for me, speed tests are just a rough guide not gospel.

Appreciate the tips, guys. I agree, real testing is key since speeds can vary so much depending on time and server. I might try fast.com and see how it stacks up against the usual speedtest.net results I get.
