Double VPN from NordVPN - speed and latency numbers

Tried out NordVPN's double hop thing for like 2 weeks. Running tests on a gigabit line here in the US. Just a single VPN to Atlanta, got like 650 Mbps down and ping around 45ms. Then I did the double hop US to Canada and it was bad, speed dropped to like 110 Mbps and ping shot up to 180ms. Latency is a pain, obviously. Is it overkill for most people? yeah. I used it a few times for torrents and to log into some sketchy email accounts I don't trust. The speed hit is real, watching 4k is pretty much borderline. But if you're doing something where you really don't want any single point of failure with the VPN maybe it's worth the slowdown. My take: 99% of the time it's not needed, but knowing how much it slows you down helps to decide

Last month I ran a similar test with NordVPN double hop and I noticed you kinda mixed up the ping jump. It went from 45ms on single hop to around 180ms on double but the speed hit was way worse than you said. One thing that helps is to pick a double hop route that's closer or faster for you, instead of default US-Canada. ymmv but keeping an eye on the route might save you some confusion. Stay speedy!

110 Mbps down and 180ms latency for double hop sounds about right, that's the price for extra security, smh.

just my 2 cents, that ping jump is brutal but kinda expected with double VPN, especially US to Canada. personally, I've seen similar drops with double hop on certain routes and yeah, it's legit overkill for most but useful for some low-key sensitive stuff. speed-wise, I'd rather keep it simple unless I'm doing something really sketchy.

Running tests on a gigabit line here in the US? That's a solid setup to really see what double VPN does. Honestly, I wouldn't rely on that for streaming or gaming. Use a tool like Speedtest.net or Fast.com to get a real feel, but ymmv depending on the route. I've seen people think their connection is slow, then realize their VPN configs or server choices were the bottleneck. Don't forget, sometimes the best way to handle latency issues is just ditch the double hop unless you really need it.

bruh, I dunno, I've had totally different results. double VPN for me doesn't always kill my speeds that badly, especially if I pick the right nodes. maybe your routes are just not optimized or your hardware's different? I've seen folks get decent speeds with double hop if they mess with server choices. lol

different angle: speeds with double VPN can vary a lot depending on the nodes and route quality. maybe your Canadian hop was just unlucky or the server was congested. ive seen setups where the hit isn't that bad if you pick good locations. not always a one-size-fits-all.

Been doing this 3 years now and yeah, double VPN usually drops speed quite a bit but I wonder if there are specific configs that can minimize the impact. Did u test different server combos or just one route?

just my 2 cents: have you tried mixing different server locations or doing some speed tests at different times of the day to see if it makes a difference?

Been doing this 3 years now and yeah, double VPN usually drops speed quite a bit but I wonder if there are specific configs that can minimize the impact. Did u test different server combos or just one. smh, sometimes I think people just stick to one and assume it's the best.

Last month I found switching to nearby country servers for the first hop and more distant for the second actually helped keep speeds up a bit lol. Sometimes it's all about finding the right combo without overcomplicating things.

Last month I tried switching servers and testing at different times but still found double VPN just kills speeds too much, ymmv. Sometimes it's just the nature of double VPN, no magic fix.

Been doing this 3 years and honestly, if you're running double VPN you gotta ask if the speed hit is really worth the extra privacy. Did you ever consider maybe you're just trying to force it with certain combos? Maybe some configs are just doomed to slow you down no matter what. Are you really gaining enough privacy to justify the lag or just chasing a ghost?

Been using double VPN from Nord for ages and honestly, I've seen no 50% speed drop like some claim. More like 10-20% if I pick the right servers and time of day. Ymmv, but I think ppl just assume it's always slow w/o testing properly.

Careful with double VPN speeds, I once went down to barely usable levels testing late at night, thought my setup was broken till I switched servers. YMMV, but sometimes it's just a crapshoot with latency spikes.

bruh, yeah ppl just assume it's slow without actually testing with tools like speedtest or nperf, lol.

just my 2 cents: have u guys noticed if the speed drops more on certain types of servers or locations? seems like some are more hit or miss with double VPN.

just my 2 cents: ive seen some servers actually handle double VPN decently well, but yeah, usually the farther the location the more the speed drops. worth testing different combos for your use case instead of
