Disavow file - when to use it and when not to? A case study

Hey guys, so I've been testing out disavow files lately and wanted to share a quick case. I had this client site that suddenly dropped in rankings after a backlink spike from some questionable PBNs. I was thinking about disavowing those links but then I remembered some stuff I read about how sometimes disavowing too early or without proper analysis can hurt more than help. So I ran a backlink audit with Ahrefs, identified all links from the PBNs, and made a decision to disavow only the really bad ones, not the entire bunch. Results? After a couple weeks, the site stabilized and actually gained some traffic. Tbh, I'm still not 100% sure if disavowing was the hero or just timing, but I'd say it's worth considering if you see sudden drops with a spike in spammy backlinks. When do you guys think it's necessary to disavow? Do you do it pre-emptively or wait till you see actual harm? Curious about your experiences, especially with PBN cleanup or spammy link issues.

i think you gotta be super careful with disavow even if its PBNs, sometimes google can see it as manipulation if you do it wrong. my tip is to always keep a backup of your backlinks before disavowing, so if stuff goes wrong you can re-upload or clear the disavow. also, using tools like SEMrush or Majestic along with Ahrefs can give u a better picture of bad links u might miss.

i gotta disagree on disavowing only bad links sometimes. in my experience, if you got a lot of spammy PBNs, disavowing parts of them can still leave some bad signals floating around and hurt your rankings long term. sometimes better just to disavow the whole batch and start fresh, especially if you unsure about what's really toxic. sometimes better safe than sorry, imo.

I gotta disagree a bit, bruh, I've seen cases where disavowing early just masked bigger issues, and you end up with lost link juice. not all dead weight is toxic, and sometimes a manual clean-up before disavow can save ya from overdoing it. data shows over 70% of sites don't need heavy disavowing if they're already healthy, so don't throw it all in the trash without checkin.
