China VPN reality check: numbers don't lie

just got back from a 3 month gig outta Shenzhen did a bunch of speed and connection tests on different services cause the marketing claims are just nuts. here's what i actually saw tested 4 big providers over a month. success rate for the first connection was all over the place. provider a had like 92% success using their obfuscated servers but speeds dropped to like 30% of my normal on a good day. provider b was more like 70% success but faster when it did connect, maybe 50% of normal. you gotta have multiple configs ready - i had wireguard, openvpn tcp on 443, and their stealth protocol all set up. if you go, don't just rely on one app. grab the config files, set up manual connections. the app might not even download once you get there. also, residential ip proxies are worth checking out for some cases but they cost more. for just access, my setup was a travel router with 3 different vpn profiles loaded. swapped them every day. annoying but it worked. total monthly cost for two solid services was like 25 bucks.

ngl did you mean success rate for initial connection or overall connection stability? kinda different things fam.

been doing this 3 years, and yeah, connection stability and success rate are two different beasts. always gotta check both, especially outta China where even stable ISPs can be flaky. how do you usually troubleshoot if one provider's speed drops mid-session?

92% success on obfuscated servers sounds kinda high, I found lower even with same setup, maybe different locations or timing?

careful with that, lol. success rate on obfuscated servers can vary a lot based on time of day, location, even how busy the network is. just cuz it worked high one day doesn't mean it'll be the same every time

disagree, success rate and speed are kinda linked but also separate, like just 'cause you connect doesnt mean its fast enough for what you need. always test during different times of day too, network load can change a lot. also, if you use a VPN with obfs, try switching protocols often, some work better at different times.

Did you find success rate varies a lot over the course of a day or week? ymmv but in my experience, it's almost always fluctuating more than people expect. speeds too, not just success.

bruh yeah that's what i mean, success and speed fluctuate so much like you might get a good run at 3pm and then total crap at 9pm like you gotta constantly test and tweak configs or it's a waste of time. reaaally wish there was a more stable solution but until then, constant monitoring is key.

ngl been doing this 3 years, and yeah, success rate and speed are totally different. also, different times of day or even days can mess with both. how do you usually decide which configs to keep as backup?

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, I meant initial connection success rate mostly, but stability is a whole other story. Location and time of day definitely matter, especially in China. And true, 92% might be optimistic, I was just surprised it was that high in my tests.

been doing this 2 years, and yeah, numbers don't lie. sometimes u get baited by high ctrs but conversions can be trash. always gotta check the actual ROI lmao

Always keep an eye on the bounce rate in your analytics. I once had a campaign with decent CTR but super high bounce, so the traffic was basically worthless. Numbers can trick you if you don't dig into the quality of the visitors.

Just my 2 cents, I think numbers do tell a story but can also be misleading if you don't consider the context behind them. Like CTRs can be high but if your CPC is sky high or conversions are low, it's not really a win. So yeah, numbers are important but gotta read between the lines

been doing this like 2 years and honestly, one thing that helps me stay on top of the numbers is using Voluum for tracking its prettyyy detailed and helps spot stuff like fake clicks or weird spikes real quick. keeps me from chasing dead ends.

I actually had a campaign that looked perfect on paper but turned out to be a total flop once I checked the traffic sources. Numbers can be real, but they can also hide a lot if you don't see where they come from.

Numbers can lie if you don't know where they come from, lol. Just cuz you see big click counts doesn't mean the traffic is legit. Always dig into source quality or you're just guessing.

bruh, I gotta disagree a bit. I ran a campaign in China and the numbers looked solid but the traffic was mostly from legit users. Sometimes the sources are real but still get skewed by weird habits or auto-bots, so u gotta go deeper than just the numbers.

ran a China campaign last month, traffic looked legit but I caught a bunch of fake referrers halfway thru.
