ok I saw that thread about price ranges and honestly it made me think of how crazy the pricing has gotten. Like back in like maybe 2003-2004 when I started, you could buy a basic guest post link for like $50 tops and these were on legit hobby blogs not pbn nonsense. Today people charge $300+ for what looks exactly the same but with inflated metrics from some tool and ymmv huge variance.
The thing is the quality tiers used to be simple: article placement vs homepage link vs directory whatever. Now there are like seven layers: niche edit, portal inclusion, featured article, sidebar widget it feels stupid. Everyone is just making up new terms to justify higher prices because they know buyers want keywords spread out.
I remember buying direct wp blog admin access for $100 flat so I could put up my own posts without any outreach btw those sites were totally real with genuine traffic not fake ahrefs numbers. That was the sweet spot before pbns got popular around 2010-ish. After that everything turned into tiered packages where you have to buy bundles even if you only need one good link.
Anyway my take is that white hat vs black hat debate doesn't really apply anymore to purchased links because most sellers operate in gray area where they control editorial but pretend its organic acquisition which is silly lol if you pay money it's paid period no matter how many emails they send during process.
 
I kinda disagree tho, I think white hat and black hat still matter but the lines are definitely blurred. Do you think there's still a legit difference or is it all just gray area now?
 
I disagree a bit, the line still exists but yeah it's super blurry now. Buying links is all gray area, but I think white hat still has a legit vibe if you focus on content and outreach, not just paid placements.
 
last month i was going through some old backlinks i bought around 2005 and realized the prices back then were kinda the same, but the quality was way higher since most sites were legit hobbies not just money sites. think the problem now is that everyone's making up new terms to justify these inflated prices, but honestly it's all just gray area once money changes hands. the lines between white and black are totally blurred at this point.

ppl still sleeping on linkwhisper, that tool's perfect for spotting legit ops and avoiding the sketchy ones, tbh.
 
just my 2 cents, but prices always seem to inflate over time but the quality standards kinda stay the same, so I think if you know what you're looking for and do your due diligence you can still find decent links without getting caught up in the high price hysteria. also I think the whole gray area thing is where most of us end up anyway so not much point arguing about the black and white anymore.
 
man honestly the inflation in prices just makes me laugh sometimes. like it's all just smoke and mirrors now with all these new tiers and fancy metrics. back in the day, you knew what you paid for was a real site, not some inflated metric with a fancy label. feels like everyone just keeps chasing the next shiny thing to justify charging more lol.
 
thanks for the replies guys appreciate the different takes, yeah the line is definitely blurry now but I agree white hat still matters if you keep it real with content and outreach instead of just buying links all day long ymmv. about the legit difference I think it's always been a gray area but the goal should be to stay as close to white as you can even if it's not perfect. and lol @ saving for later, some of us still remember when buying wp admin was a thing, those were the days.
 
man why do you say buying links in 2025? I've been around long enough to see how algo updates and Google's stance have shifted so much. What worked 20 years ago would get you sandboxed now, imo.
 
just my 2 cents, legit SEO might be the only safe way but it's also the slowest and most boring path. seen guys get burned even trying to keep it legit all the time, algorithms keep changing and penalizing the same stuff. always feels like a gamble no matter what.
 
yep exactly, it's like trying to run a dial-up on 5G now. old tricks just don't cut it anymore, gotta stay on the cutting edge or get burned.
 
Bought some shady links back in the day thought I was untouchable, got slapped hard. never thought it'd catch up but here we are. some lessons you gotta learn the hard way, huh?
 
buying links now? lol, feels like trying to fix a sinking ship with duct tape. better be ready for the next slap from algorithms or just waste money.
 
Buying links in 2025? Lol, I remember when I thought buying expired domains was the secret sauce. Did you ever try to explain that to a client?
 
Careful with buying links still, it's a short-term fix that can backfire quick. Tried that dance, got slapped by algo updates more than once. Better to build real authority than chase quick cr rev
