Backlink spy work from back in the day lol

Man I was thinkin about how I used to do competitor backlink analysis like 3 years ago and it was a whole different game. Remember when I first started, I'd just pull their backlinks in Ahrefs and then manually check if the links were still live and relevant. I'd spend like an hour on one site, and sometimes find 20-30 backlinks that looked good but then half of them were dead or nofollow. It was annoying but kinda satisfying when I'd find a hidden gem that boosted my own site. I'd keep a spreadsheet with those links and then try to get similar ones from the same sites. Back then I'd only get like 2-3 backlinks a month but they were high quality and relevant. Now I see folks talk about tools that do all this automatically but I remember the grind, it felt more real. I think I managed to get like a +5 DR jump in 2 weeks just from those targeted backlinks, mostly niche relevant directories and some guest posts. It's funny how simple tactics used to work better, now everyone's chasing PBNs and crazy stuff. Still, I wonder if I could get those results again with just manual outreach and focus on relevance. Anyone else remember how it used to be or still do stuff the old way?

just my 2 cents, do you think that manual outreach can still be as effective or is it just a nostalgia thing? seems like the game has shifted a lot but maybe there's still room for that old school approach if you do it right.

Different angle: I get the nostalgia, but maybe manual outreach still works if you focus on hyper-relevant sites and really build relationships. Instead of just looking for quick wins, spend time on personalized pitches and offering real value. That kinda effort can still cut through the noise, even with all the automation tools out there.

Been doing this 4 years and honestly, manual is dead if you ask me. I tried it again last year and it's just too slow and messy, especially with how much content is out there now. automation is king, but yeah, sometimes I miss the grind, lol.

Bruh, remember when I spent a whole Sunday just hunting for one good niche directory? lol. I swear I got like a 10% response rate back then, but the quality of those links was insane. Now? 50 outreach emails later and I get 1 reply, if I'm lucky. Sometimes I think the old ways had a more genuine feel, even if they sucked ass with time lol.

spreadsheets are ancient history for me, lol. I found that manual outreach and relationship building are still the best way to get relevant links. The grind's different now but quality links still come from genuine connections, not just copying what worked ages ago.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys. I get it, automation's way faster but man, that manual grind did teach you stuff, like really understanding the sites and building better relationships. Maybe there's still a way to do it smart without wasting forever, idk. kinda miss those old days tho, it felt more personal.

just my 2 cents: I actually never relied much on backlink spy tools back in the day. spent more time manually checking competitors' links and building outreach. kinda wild how much easier it is now with all these new tools, lol

Haha back in the day we'd probably still be using Majestic index tool and chasing that link juice like maniacs. Tip - if you wanna spy on backlinks now, don't just rely on one tool. Use Ahrefs, SEMrush and even monitor backlinks from competitors' backlinks for that extra edge.

bruh, do you ever wonder if back in the day we were just guessing more than spying? ever try reverse engineering a competitor's backlink profile to find their hidden gems?

70% of backlink spying back in the day was just guesswork tbh, especially before tools got good. Remember trying to manually find those hidden backlinks and hoping you caught the right one? Good times.

Man, I remember spending hours looking at raw server logs just to find some backlink trail, lol. Now with tools like Ahrefs or SEMrush, it's kinda like cheating but still fun to see how much easier things got. Guess we lost some of that old school hunt vibe tho.

Haha, like 90% guesswork, imo. Remember wasting hours hunting for backlinks in raw server logs? Now it's just a few clicks and you got the data. Feels kinda wrong but hey, progress

Haha, back in the day we were basically backlink archaeologists lol. My tip: always check the domain authority before chasing backlinks, saves a lot of time. Trust me, you learn quick to avoid wasting hours on low-quality links

disagree, I think it was more like guesswork mixed with frustration lol. like trying to spot backlinks blindfolded sometimes. progress or not, it was a pain

99% of the time domain authority is just a rough guess, not a real indicator of a backlink's value. always test and verify yourself, don't rely solely on metrics.

just my 2 cents, it was more like backlink work from back in the day lol not backlink spy work, big difference. one involved actually checking competitors sites, the other was more guesswork and hoping for the best.
