Are free VPNs secretly selling my data? Confused lol

So I've been messing around with these free VPNs trying to save cash but now I read stuff like they might sell your data or track your activity? Like how do they even stay afloat if they don't charge? Is it just ads or do they actually sell your info? Then I see some say they have decent speeds for streaming but then again they have ads or popups so like, is that how they make money? Also, I keep hearing that some free VPNs say they don't log or sell data but then I find out they do exactly that. it's kinda suspicious. And how do you even tell which ones are legit or just plain scam? Like do I need to pay for one or are there some free ones that won't sell me out? I honestly don't get the whole privacy thing anymore, sometimes it feels like even paid VPNs aren't safe. Just stuck trying to understand if I should keep wasting time on free ones or go full paid. or maybe self-hosted or something, but that sounds way too complicated. Anybody got real experience or proof on this? Lmao, I'm just so confused.

they stay afloat by selling user data or bombarding u with ads, usually both. free VPNs gotta make cash somehow and most aren't legit. better off paying for one or self-hosting if privacy matters, tbh.

man bruh, honestly, just look for VPNs with transparent privacy policies and no-logs claims from legit sources. sometimes paid ain't perfect but it's a safer bet than free ones that could sell your data. keep it simple, do your homework.

Haha, yeah free VPNs are like that shady friend who never pays his share but still expects you to trust him. From my experience, most free ones do sell data or shove ads, which is why I switched to paid ones after getting tired of popups and sketchy logs. Honestly, if privacy matters even a little, paying for a legit VPN is the way to go. Self-hosted sounds cool but yeah, too much hassle unless you're a tech wizard.

Careful with free VPNs man, I tried one a while back just for shits and giggles and it kept poppin ads and slowing my speed like crazy, turns out they were selling data or something. Paid ones rn seem way more legit, at least I know what I get is what I pay for. Honestly, rn I just stick with Nord or Express

Last month I tried a free VPN just to test it out and yeah, it was full of popups and weird slowdowns. Do you guys think some paid VPNs are actually safer or is it all just hype?

that's the classic bait and switch, man. They claim no logs or selling but then do it secretly. Afaik, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Better to stick with legit paid VPNs or self-host if privacy matters.

paid VPNs are definitely not perfect but usually safer than free ones, since they have more to lose if they sell your data or screw up their reputation. some legit paid VPNs do keep logs but usually they have clear policies and better security practices. but yeah, always read their privacy policy and do some research, coz some still play games.

different angle: maybe some of those free VPNs just use ads to keep the lights on but that still means they might track stuff. not always about selling data, sometimes just about targeted ads. trust is a whole other issue, bruh.

disagree, i think you overestimate how much free VPNs are actually safe. just cuz they say no logs doesn't mean they don't track or sell data and some are legit scammy even if they seem decent at first. paying for a legit VPN usually cuts out

Yep exactly, I've seen some free VPNs push ads relentlessly and then you find out they're tracking everything just to serve those ads better. I remember trying a popular free one that kept popups popping up mid-stream and turns out they were logging my activity even tho they claimed to be no logs. It's like, the moment they start pushing ads hard, the trust just melts away.

Over 50% of free VPNs have been found tracking user data or pushing relentless ads, so yeah it's a minefield out there. Honestly, if you want real privacy, paid or self-hosted is way better but I get it if that sounds too complicated atm. Just gotta do your research and read reviews before trusting any VPN, free or paid.
