VPN on router vs VPN app, why is this still such a headache?

ok so i posted about vpn stuff before but now im actually losing it. i switched from just using vpn apps on my phone and pc to trying to set one up on my router, thought it'd be better for all my devices and maybe more reliable. but man it's been a total nightmare. router vpn is wayyy more annoying to set up, takes ages to fix anything, and now my internet speed is all over the place. the app was simple at least, yeah it could kill battery but it usually worked. now im getting random drops, some things just refuse to connect, streaming is laggy as hell. is this just me or are router vpns always kinda sus? thinking maybe i should scrap this and go back to the app but ppl say that's worse for privacy or multiple devices. tbh i need some actual advice or someone who's dealt with this mess before. anyone have tips? or know a vpn that works ok on a router without making my wifi useless?

just my 2 cents, but i tried router vpns once and it was a whole mess, speed was trash and connection drops like crazy. ended up going back to app based and honestly, it's been smoother, even if battery drains. router vpns always seem kinda sus tbh, especially for stability.

been doing this 3 years and yeah router vpns can be a pain, especially when ur trying to tweak settings and everything just randomly drops or slows down. once I spent like 2 hrs messing with configs just to get my stream stable, only to realize I shoulda just stuck with the app. sometimes simplicity wins, imho. Keep it real

ngl careful with openvpn configs on router, i spent a whole night trying to tweak it with that, ended up just grabbing a flash router with a built-in vpn like the Asus ac86u and using

you think it's just you or are router vpns really just kinda sus? I've been there, speed and connection drops are common and honestly, sometimes sticking with the app is way easier unless you got a specific reason to go router.

been doing this for a bit and honestly router vpns are a pain in the ass, always drops or slows down just when u think u nailed it. sometimes just better to stick to the app unless u wanna deal with endless config nightmares. plus, speed will always take a hit, no way around it.

different angle: I tried the router vpn route a while ago, thought it was gonna be epic for all my devices but honestly it was just a headache. I ended up going back to a dedicated VPN app and using a split-tunnel setup for my main stuff. Speed, stability, all that good stuff stayed way better and I didn't wanna throw my router out the window. sometimes simpler is just better, ya know?

Haha, yeah, it's like every time I think I finally got my router VPN stable, it turns into a speed rollercoaster. One time I spent hours tweaking settings, only to lose my connection in the middle of a stream. Ever had a moment where you finally thought you had it

Last month i tried setting up a router vpn for my smart home stuff and ended up with the same crap. random drops, some devices just refused to connect, streaming was a nightmare. ended up just turning it off and sticking to the app. feels like router vpn just ain't ready for prime time.

honestly, I think router VPNs are kinda overrated for stability. if you really want solid privacy and less hassle, maybe try a dedicated device like a small VPN router or even a Pi with OpenVPN. kinda lowkey, just a thought.

Ever try setting up a dedicated mini-PC or a VPN router like a Gl.iNet? better control, less messing with your main router, and you can troubleshoot without breaking your whole network.

yo thanks for the tips, legit appreciated. yeah the openvpn stuff is sus, i might just look into those pre-flashed routers or whatever, sounds less headache. no way im spending 2 hrs again just to get drops and lag. probs back to app for now, but i still wanna figure out a better way.

why is this still such a headache? prob because routers are like that one cousin who refuses to learn new tricks. Both have their quirks and quirks are a pain in the ass.

VPN on router vs VPN app, why is this still such a headache? Honestly, it's probably cuz routers are just not built for this kinda thing most of the time, especially the cheaper or older models. They're like trying to squeeze a square peg into a round hole. The app approach is way more straightforward but then you get into issues with device compatibility and speeds which can also be a nightmare to troubleshoot.

I think it's not that simple. I've run both setups and honestly, it's more about the specific router firmware and how well it handles VPN configs. Some routers are surprisingly smooth, others are just a nightmare no matter what.

Actually, I think like 70% of the headache comes from user error or outdated firmware more than the setup itself. You can have a rock solid VPN on router if you keep firmware updated and know what you're doing, but most folks

Actually, my own headache was when I tried to set up VPN on my router and didn't realize I needed to flash it with custom firmware like OpenWRT or DD-WRT first, which took me ages to figure out. Once I did that, it was a, but man, that initial mess was frustrating as hell. So yeah, firmware updates and knowing what your router can handle is the real deal.

Careful with assumptions, both setups have quirks. I had issues with VPN on router until I switched to a better firmware, still the app sometimes drops connection. It's mostly about hardware and how much you wanna tinker.

I kinda disagree, like the headache mostly comes from inconsistent hardware support and the fact most ISP routers are trash for VPNs. I spent hours messing with my router and custom firmware just to get decent speeds. Apps are more straightforward but less stable sometimes lol
