VPN for China / Restricted Countries - Beware of the Risks

So I posted about VPNs for China and other super strict countries a while ago but I gotta say I found out some stuff that really alarmed me. I've been using VPNs in these countries for a while but recent research and reports show that some popular VPNs might not be as safe as we think. Turns out, a lot of VPNs claim to have no logs but actually keep some data or have security flaws that can be exploited. And in places like China, the government has cracked down hard on VPNs, blocking a ton of them and even suing providers that operate without approval. I saw some VPNs that are supposedly 'Chinese friendly' but are actually just proxies, which aren't encrypted and can get you in serious trouble. The worst part? Some VPNs are pretty slow or keep disconnecting, which is a nightmare if you're trying to stream or work from inside China. Plus, protocols matter a lot OpenVPN and WireGuard might be good, but if the VPN provider is shady or keeps logs, you're still vulnerable. I've seen reports of VPN apps silently installing malware or tracking user activity, which is exactly the opposite of what you need. If you're in one of these countries and relying on a VPN, I'd seriously recommend testing it thoroughly, using speed tests, kill switches, DNS leaks, and privacy audits before trusting it. Just a heads up, don't buy into the hype that all VPNs are equally secure. In these regimes, even the best VPNs can be compromised or blocked. Stay paranoid, stay safe, and keep your eyes peeled for updates. This stuff ain't a joke anymore lol.

yeah that's the nightmare i ran into a while ago, thought i was all good with a popular VPN but then bam, weird ads popping up, and i caught some weird activity on my device. had to do a full wipe, lost mad time. never again trust blindly, fwiw

Honestly, switching to a service like Mullvad or IVPN might be better in these cases, they're more transparent and don't keep logs, plus their security protocols are solid. A full wipe sucks but sometimes it's the only way to stay safe when trust gets broken.

Honestly, I think a lot of folks are still buying into the "no logs" hype without really digging into what these VPNs are doing behind the scenes. Yeah, some protocols are decent, but if the provider is shady or keeps data, you're still in the same boat. I wouldn't trust any VPN blindly in these regimes, no matter what the marketing says.

different angle: maybe think about setting up a VPN on a dedicated device, like a router, so you can control the security settings more tightly and avoid shady apps. also, using a VPN with open-source code and auditing it yourself

Different angle: maybe using a decoy or obfuscation tool along with the VPN could help hide what you're doing from strict regimes. some VPNs offer stealth modes or obfuscated servers that make traffic look normal. anyone tried those?

Last month I was messing around with a VPN in a super strict country and it got blocked super quick, lol. I think even with obfuscation or stealth modes, if the regime is cracking down hard, they can still find ways to block or detect VPN traffic. kinda makes me think no matter what

Ever tried using a VPN like Shadowsocks in these environments? It's not perfect but it's less obvious than OpenVPN or WireGuard, especially if you set it up on a dedicated device. Just a heads up, even then, if the provider logs or gets compromised, you're still at risk.

last month I was testing a VPN in a country with heavy censorship and it got blocked in like 2 hours, smh. It's wild how even legit VPNs can get snatched away or monitored if the regime is really on top of it. Just more proof that nothing

ngl 70% of VPNs tested in censored countries leak DNS or have security flaws within the first week, lol and it's not just slow speed or disconnects, it's real security risks if you rely on the wrong provider.

just my 2 cents, that's why I keep testing and switching up VPNs often, no perfect fix but gotta stay ahead of the game. in these regimes, trust is a joke.

spot on, I remember trying a VPN in a heavily censored country last year, and it worked fine for a week then just vanished off the map. made me paranoid as hell, like they can just pull the plug anytime.

yeah, that's exactly what I mean, even legit VPNs can just disappear or get blocked without warning, makes you wonder how safe any of it really is. always gotta have a backup plan or just accept the risks.
