ok so the airport wifi VPN setup is kinda perfect now

so i posted about travel vpn headaches a while back, trying to watch f1 from germany or whatever. anyway just figured out a dumb simple way that actually works, no weird errors. you know how most airport wifis block vpn ports right? got stuck for like an hour in lax with my usual openvpn config dead. switched to wireguard on udp 443, connected instantly. idk why i didn't try it before. set it up before you leave, takes like 10 min. use the phone app, add your home server as peer with endpoint port set to 443 not the default 51820. tested on three different airport networks this month and no blocks yet. streaming works fine too, watched prime video on a layover w/o any region nonsense.

yo, this tip saved me last week at JFK, never thought about changing the port to 443. been using openvpn for ages but wireguard on 443 is way more stable on airport wifi. shoulda tried it earlier, bruh.

i dunno, changing ports ain't always a magic fix, rn some networks get sneaky. but yeah, wireguard on 443 does tend to be more resilient than openvpn on random ports. still, always keep a backup plan.

80% of the time changing ports works but not always. some airports are catching on, blocking udp 443 too. still, wireguard on 443 can save you a lot of hassle most times.

yeah changing to udp 443 is like the secret handshake now, airports be trying to block everything but they forget about the tiny little loopholes. still, sometimes they get smarter and block that too but most of the time it works like a charm. ymmv tho, some places just refuse to let you slide.

Haha, totally. It's like those airport WiFis are playing whack-a-mole with VPN ports. I swear I've seen them block UDP 443 for a sec, then forget to unblock it the next day. They really think they can outsmart us lol.

Nah, I gotta disagree, I'd say it's more like 95% for me. I've tested on like 10 airports and switching to udp 443 almost always gets me through, no issues. Some airports just sleep on blocking that port, fr.

Spot on, but I gotta play devil's advocate here. While udp 443 works most of the time, some airports might still be on top of that and start blocking it too. So I wouldn't rely on it 100% long-term, ymmv.
