VPN for Gaming: Ping reduction or placebo?

hey everyone, i've been trying out some vpns to see if they actually help with gaming ping or if they just make it worse. from what i've seen, some vpn services with good servers and stuff like WireGuard can sometimes lower your ping, especially if your isp routing sucks. but it's not a sure thing, ymmv, and honestly vpns often just add extra hops that make latency worse. no shocker there. protocol matters a lot - WireGuard is way faster and more stable, but some vpns still use OpenVPN by default which is slower. tbh the biggest thing is server location. pick a close server with solid routing and you might get better ping, but if the vpn server is overloaded or has a bad connection your ping is gonna tank. so if you're just trying to reduce ping, test it out first - don't fall for the hype or some random deal. also think about whether you even need a vpn for gaming or if it's just for privacy, cause sometimes you're better off sticking with your isp and tweaking your own network setup. anyone else actually notice ping improvements or is it all just placebo?

I gotta disagree on the ping improvements. I actually tried a VPN with a nearby server, used WireGuard, and my ping got worse, not better. I think it's more about your specific network and routing, not just the protocol or server location. Sometimes VPNs just add latency no matter what.

Been doing this 7 years in affiliate marketing and I gotta say I've seen the same. I tried a VPN with a close server and WireGuard, and my ping actually shot up. I think it really depends on your local routing and network setup. Sometimes VPNs just add latency, not reduce it.

different angle: ive seen some legit ping drops using VPNs with WireGuard, but only when routing is tight and server is close. 1) setup matters, 2) your local network quality plays a role, 3) testing multiple servers helps. dont just assume it's placebo till u try different options.

if you wanna actually test if a vpn helps your ping, try doing a traceroute before and after connecting. that'll show if your packets are taking a shorter or longer route. most of the time ppl just assume vpn = better but it's really about the route and your isp's peering. sometimes a good route makes all the difference, not just the server location.

I've actually had luck with VPNs for ping when I use a nearby server with WireGuard and good routing. but if the VPN is overloaded or the server is sus, it just makes things worse. testing with traceroute helps me see if it's actually worth it.

been doing this 28 years, and honestly sometimes a VPN with a close server and good routing can actually cut ping, but most of the time it's just a gamble or adds latency. it's all about testing and not falling for the hype.

I gotta disagree, my experience is totally different. I've had vpn actually drop my ping by using a close WireGuard server and legit good routing, but ymmv. Most of the time it's just extra hops

ngl, i've seen it too, sometimes vpn actually helps if u pick a good server with solid routing but yeah, mostly a gamble. not every time but when it hits, it hits highkey worth it.

different angle: yeah, that's what I keep telling people. like, sure, sometimes you get lucky and a VPN helps, but more often than not it's just extra latency and a headache. people forget that the routing, server load and protocol matter way more than just having a VPN on. gotta be real, most times you're better off fixing your network or just playing without it.

last month i tried a vpn with a close server and good routing but it still made my ping worse lol, so idk if it's really worth it for gaming unless u really test it out first.

Yep exactly, I tried VPNs for gaming and honestly it's hit or miss. One day it's like a miracle and I get lower ping, next day it's a total placebo. It's so frustrating cause I wanna believe but sometimes it just feels like placebo effect.

bruh I feel ya, I tried VPNs too and some days it's like smooth sailing, others it's worse than no VPN at all. Honestly I think it depends on the server and the day. Sometimes it's just luck if it helps or not.

last month i tested a VPN again after a while and honestly it made a real difference for me. my ping dropped pretty solid on certain servers and stayed stable for a good while. i think it's about finding the right VPN with good routes not just blindly using it lol. some folks just get unlucky with the setup or the server choice but not everyone is placeboing themselves.

Yeah, exactly, the route matters more than the VPN brand. I tested a few and found that good routing can cut ping by 20-30ms sometimes. It's all about sniffing out the providers that actually prioritize gaming traffic or have optimized servers in the right regions. Just using any VPN isn't gonna cut it, you gotta do some testing.

67% of gamers say VPN helps sometimes but 33% find it sus and makes ping worse, so wanna know which side you guys on? do you mostly see it helping or just adding lag?

Careful with assumptions, ymmv big time depending on your location and ISP routing. Has anyone tested multiple VPNs with ping spikes at different times or just one setup?

Who knew gaming and VPNs could be like a box of chocolates, huh? You guys ever find a VPN that actually consistently cuts ping or is it always a gamble?

yep exactly, ever try different VPN servers to see if ping actually drops or just fluctuates? lol

different angle: remember that one time I thought I nailed a good VPN, only to find out it was making my ping worse during prime hours? guess it's all about timing and luck, not some magic VPN fix
