Double VPN / multi-hop - overkill or actually needed?

Hey guys, so I've been thinking about this whole double VPN or multi-hop thing, right? Like, is it just total overkill for most peeps or does it actually make a real difference? I mean, I get the privacy boost but does it really slow down your speed a lot? cuz I've tested some VPNs with multi-hop and yeah, the speed drops quite a bit but then again, your privacy is pretty much bulletproof? I saw some deals on NordVPN and ProtonVPN doing multi-hop now, like they're kinda pushing it hard. is it worth the extra cash or just a gimmick? Also, is it better to set up your own multi-hop using different providers, or is that just asking for trouble? Honestly kinda confused if it's just for paranoids or if legit privacy peeps swear by it. anyone got real experience or just opinions? oh and do streaming or torrenting get affected more by multi-hop or is it just the same as normal VPN? maybe overkill for just casual browsing but feels kinda cool to have that extra layer sometimes. hmm. might give it a shot but don't wanna waste $$ if it's just a fad or slows me down too much. thoughts?

Multi-hop VPNs can drop your speed by like 20-50% depending on the provider and server chain, so if you're hitting a 100 Mbps base connection, you might see 50-80 Mbps on multi-hop, which is still decent for most stuff but can hurt streaming or torrenting a bit. lol

been doing multi-hop for a few years now and honestly I never saw much of a speed hit that mattered. Maybe 10-15% at most, and I do a lot of streaming and torrenting. idk if it's just my setup but I don't think it's overkill unless you really paranoid about some kinda targeted attack. what's your actual threat model?

Different angle: maybe multi-hop isn't just about speed or paranoia. Could be more about layering privacy for really sensitive stuff. Like, if you don't trust even the VPN providers, then maybe it's worth it, but idk if most peeps actually need it.

Haha, so you wanna be a digital ninja or what? Honestly, imo multi-hop is kinda like wearing a chainmail shirt in a bar fight, overkill for most but maybe smart if you're high value targets. Speed drop can be a pain but not always enough to ruin streaming or torrenting unless you're pushing 4K or doing heavy stuff. Setting up your own chain is just asking for trouble, imo, unless you really know what you're doing.

Careful with thinking multi-hop is just for paranoids, bruh. I know a guy who works in info sec, swears by multi-hop for certain intel ops, not just because he's paranoid but cuz he deals with legit sensitive stuff. It ain't about speed or even being paranoid, sometimes it's just about layering defenses, especially if you're targeted by some serious players

different angle: yeah, those VPNs pushing multi-hop hard but tbh, if u wanna get serious about privacy, u can set up your own chain with different providers. just gotta watch for leaks and DNS stuff tho, or it's just a waste. speed drop sucks but if u know how to config right, it's kinda worth it for the peace of mind.

honestly last month I tried multi-hop on NordVPN just for kicks, and yeah, the speed took a hit but I felt way more secure. Do you guys think setting up a custom chain with different providers is really worth the hassle, or is it more trouble than it's worth? Ymmv but I wonder if most casual folks really need that level of privacy.

Do you really think the speed hit is worth the privacy boost or are most ppl just overestimating how much multi-hop actually protects them?

Do you really think multi-hop is worth the speed loss for most casual users? I've run it on ProtonVPN and honestly, the speed hit was noticeable but the privacy felt way tighter. For most peeps doing basic browsing or streaming, a solid single VPN is enough. If you want true privacy nerd level, maybe consider setting up your own chain with different providers, but that's a whole different beast and kinda overkill for most.

honestly, most casual folks prob don't need multi-hop unless they're really paranoid or doing sketchy stuff. The speed loss is legit and often not worth it for everyday browsing or streaming. Overkill for most and yeah, you gotta wonder if the privacy boost justifies the hassle.

spot on. most ppl just want fast and easy, not a slow maze. privacy's cool but not if it kills your flow. sometimes overkill just ain't worth it

yep exactly, most folks just want their stuff to work fast and smooth. multi-hop is kinda like wearing a tinfoil hat when you're just gonna check memes, not worth the slowdown. if you wanna boost privacy, maybe just pick a solid no-logs VPN and enable the kill switch, that's usually enough. also, test speeds with something like fast.com after switching configs so you don't get blindsided.
