VPN Extensions vs Full Apps - beware of the pitfalls

yo just a heads up about vpn browser extensions - they're not enough tbh. i get it, they're light and easy to switch on/off but here's the thing: a lot of them just use your existing vpn or route stuff through a proxy. that's totally different from having the full app running with all the protocols, kill switches, privacy stuff turned on. i've seen people use extensions for torrenting or streaming and forget they don't have the same encryption or leak protection. plus some extensions are basically marketing gimmicks or built on sketchy code. real danger is many don't run a proper vpn tunnel, they just redirect at the browser level so all your other apps and system traffic are exposed. you want privacy but then you're using this lightweight add-on that might leak your ip or dns. i've tested a bunch and honestly for serious privacy or streaming geo-blocks, full vpn apps are the way. they have multi-protocol support like wireguard openvpn ikev2, kill switches, dns leak protection, cover everything on your device. i know some people wanna save ram or avoid a cluttered ui but trading security for that little convenience can backfire hard. seen cases where people think they're safe cause they have a vpn extension but really they're leaking data or wasting money on bad services. bottom line - if you care about privacy, streaming, torrenting, bypassing blocks, skip the browser-only extensions and go for the full app. might take a couple extra seconds to open but your security and peace of mind are worth it

bruh, I get what you're saying but not everyone needs a full vpn app for everything. sometimes the extensions do the job fine if you're just browsing casually and not doing anything super sensitive. sure, they might leak if misconfigured but plenty of legit ones actually do a decent job at protecting your IP and DNS, especially if you pick a reputable provider. also, not everyone wants to run a full app all the time just for light use. so yeah, full apps are better for hardcore stuff but extensions aren't all useless either.

yep, totally agree. i used a extension once for quick browsing but got burned when it leaked my ip on a legit site. now i always run full apps for anything serious. less risk, more peace of mind

Careful with extensions that look legit but are just marketing gimmicks. Always check their privacy policy and reputation on forums like Reddit or Trustpilot before trusting them with your data. U might also wanna run a leak test (dnsleaktest.com) after installing any extension to see if ur ip or DNS leaks.

Been doing this 7 years, and I remember using a VPN extension once just for quick checks, thought I was safe. Then I realized my real IP was exposed during a leak test. Ever had a moment where a lightweight tool bit you in the ass?

Ever actually tested those extensions with leak tests? I did once and was surprised how many leak or just reroute traffic at browser level only. full apps really do make a difference if you care about leaks, lol. most ppl don't realize how easy it is to expose their IP with just a simple extension

Just my 2 cents, people underestimate how many extensions are basically just fancy proxies with zero real encryption. I've seen folks get burned because they think clicking an icon equals privacy. Full apps are the only way if you're serious about not getting leaked or caught off guard

Always run leak tests on your VPN setup, not just trust the interface. Extensions can look legit but leak your IP or DNS easily. Go full app if privacy's a priority.

man vPN extensions can leak DNS requests sometimes, so always check if your traffic is actually going through the VPN or if DNS is leaking. ymmv but I'd double check those settings or use a leak test tool

Ever run into a situation where your VPN extension just didn't do the job and you only found out after a leak test? bruh, that stuff can catch you off guard if you don't test regularly

people sleep on DNS leaks with extensions, smh, you gotta test that stuff constantly or it's a false sense of security.

VPN Extensions vs Full Apps - beware of the pitfalls, ppl sleep on how easy extensions can leak DNS or WebRTC info. gotta test those leaks regularly or it's a false sense of security. stay sharp!

Ever had an extension leak WebRTC even after testing? I've seen cases where people assume it's safe but forget to disable WebRTC leaks in browser settings. Full apps tend to be more reliable for consistent leaks protection in my experience

Bruh, yeah, extensions are a gamble sometimes. I swear by using a tool like BrowserLeaks to test leaks often, keeps me sane. If you serious about security, full apps are still the safer route imo.

I disagree that full apps are always safer, extensions can be just as solid if you pick the right ones. I've used a tool likeiple VPNLeakTest to double check leaks after installing extensions and it's saved me more than once. ymmv but do your leak tests constantly no matter what.

Last month I was messing around with a new extension and forgot to disable WebRTC in Chrome, and boom, leaks all over again. Do y'all think there's a way to make extensions safer, or is full apps just the way to go if you want real peace of mind?
