tbh using a VPN for gaming seems hit or miss. some people say it helps avoid crowded networks but others say it just adds lag. looking at nord and express they both say they lower ping but tests are all over the place. nord has those gaming servers that sometimes are faster but not always. then theres the whole wireguard vs openvpn thing which messes with latency too. idk if i should believe the speed hype or just keep my normal connection. anyone actually game with a VPN and have real results?
 
lol yeah, sounds like the VPN speed myth is just that, a myth. those tests are all over the place cause it really depends on your location, server choice, and what protocol you use. ngl, i tried a VPN for gaming once and it just made everything worse, so i stuck to my normal connection. maybe some swear by it tho? idk lol
 
try out pingtest.io with a VPN like PIA, they have a good selection of servers. one time I was stuck on a random EU server and switching to a nearby US server dropped my ping by 30 ms. just gotta test and see what works atm. remember, not all VPNs are the same, so pick one that's known for low latency. keep it simple, don't overthink it.

Actually, that's pretty much it, bruh. I use a service called ExitLag, it's made for gaming and helps pick the best route, sometimes it even improves ping. Not perfect but way better than generic VPNs.
 
Most folks think VPNs are magic for ping but like, studies show only about 20-30% actually see a real drop and that's if your ISP or route is terrible. ymmv but ever tried ping plotters to see if your VPN route actually makes sense?
 
just my 2 cents, VPNs can sometimes help if your ISP routing is trash but don't expect miracles. most of the time they add latency, not reduce it. best bet is still testing with ping plots or actual in-game tests.
 
Yeah, that's true, most of the time VPNs just add more latency unless your routing is totally garbage, then maybe they help a little. but don't rely on them for a ping fix, it's a gamble. ymmv but usually better to optimize your net or pick servers closer to your location.
 
I tried a VPN once for gaming and it totally made my ping worse even tho I thought it might help with routing but turns out it just added latency for me so yeah mostly just messes it up unless you're really unlucky with your ISP routes.
 
Ever notice how some VPNs actually help when ur ISP routing is really bad? I found that if u pick a VPN server close to the game server and use a fast provider, it can sometimes drop ping a bit. but honestly, most times they just add more delay, so test a few servers first.
 
just my 2 cents, yeah they can be a gamble but if u find a good VPN with fast routing close to ur game server, it might actually improve ping sometimes. but most of the time it's just a wild card. depends on ur isp and the route.
