so i posted about VPN speed tests before but i wanna focus on protocols now. tested OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2 on same server, same time, same ISP. wireguard won most of the time in speed, lower latency too. openvpn was slower, more stable sometimes but laggy. IKEv2 kinda middle ground but not as fast as wireguard. the real question is do you pick protocol based on speed or security? tbh speed matters more for streaming or gaming but security for privacy. anyone tested newer protocols? worth switching?
 
tbh so I was testing VPNs for a client last month and honestly wireguard was just smoother for streaming, but I kept openvpn around cuz of some older devices needing it. kinda funny how people act like speed's everything but then get all paranoid about security when it comes to privacy stuff. I haven't messed with the newer protocols much, but tbh I stick with wireguard unless I gotta do something weird. switching depends on your use case, but don't expect a miracle if you care about both at once.

yep exactly, IKEv2 is kinda like the middle kid, not as fast as wireguard but more stable on mobile. a tip rn is to always test your protocols on the actual devices and use tools like iperf3 for speed and ping tests. different devices can react differently even on same protocol.
 
man ever actually tested SoftEther or its variants? They claim to be flexible but how do they hold up in real world speed and stability? I've seen some folks switch to SoftEther for bypassing restrictions but never for consistent daily use. If you want solid data, I'd suggest running some real speed tests on those, not just hearsay. For that, I'd recommend using a tool like iperf3, it's underrated but gives you real measurements, not just VPN benchmarks
 
yo careful with assuming speed equals best, sometimes stable protocols like IKEv2 can be more legit for privacy even if slower rn.

nah, i disagree, those tests always seem too clean, never show how real world stuff messes with speeds. from my own tests, congestion and signal drops really kill the numbers. u gotta test in kinda normal conditions, not just a perfect setup

I see where you're coming from but I think speed tests can still give a decent baseline if you know their limits. Real-world stuff like congestion can vary but those tests are more about protocol efficiency under ideal conditions. ymmv tho
 
VPN protocols speed test breakdown? Sounds like a game of pin the tail on the donkey. I've seen so many tests that change depending on ur location and load, u can't really trust any single one
 
just my 2 cents: I ran my own tests a while back and noticed big differences even between the same protocol on different devices and times of day. VPN speed is such a moving target, u gotta test in ur own setup if u wanna trust it.
 
ok so ya, totally agree. speed tests are so influenced by ur current network and time of day, best to run ur own multiple tests if u wanna get real idea. one test alone is kinda useless tbh
 
Different angle: what if the real focus should be on stability and security rather than just raw speed? U could have the fastest VPN but if it drops connection or leaks, lol what's the point? Anyone tested for that?
 
67% of speed tests get wrecked by peak hours or your ISP throttling, so yeah, running multiple is the only way to get a real picture. But honestly who cares if stability or leaks are worse, speed's just a shiny toy in the VPN world, right? Always a balance, but so many chase speed and forget the basics.
 
if you really want a quick tip, test VPN protocols with a baseline like ping or latency first before diving into speed numbers cuz those can be misleading if your connection sucks at peak times or your ISP is throttling. but i kinda think speed still matters, especially if u game or stream, just dont forget stability and security are also huge. u can get a fast protocol but if it leaks or drops connection constantly, whats the point?
