WireGuard vs OpenVPN vs IKEv2 - Speed and Security Showdown

Everyone keeps throwing random claims about protocols but here's the real deal rn. WireGuard is fast, like stupid fast, and it's modern so it's leaner and less bloated. No surprise it crushes OpenVPN in speed tests most of the time. But don't sleep on OpenVPN, it's been around forever and its security is proven, plus lots of configs and tweaks if you're into that. IKEv2? It's kinda the middle ground, decent speed, solid security, and great stability for mobile devices but it's not as lightweight as WireGuard. Honestly, if your main goal is speed with decent security, WireGuard is the clear winner. But if you want max compatibility and proven safety, OpenVPN still holds its ground. For streaming and torrenting, WireGuard's speed is a huge plus but sometimes you gotta fall back on OpenVPN if your provider's config favors it. In the end, it's about what you value more, speed, security, or compatibility. Check your VPN provider's support for these protocols, and don't just go by reviews, test yourself with speed tests and leaks. Keep your eyes open for VPN deals that include WireGuard support rn, it's a for privacy and speed.

Yeah, fr, I ran into that too, sometimes OpenVPN just works better with certain configs and can avoid some leaks. speed's cool but stability and safety matter more, especially for streaming.

Have you tried setting up split tunneling with OpenVPN? It can help keep your main connection stable and fast while routing only specific traffic thru the VPN, kinda balancing speed and security.

Last month I tried testing all 3 protocols for streaming and torrenting, and I gotta say WireGuard was fast but OpenVPN still felt more reliable on some trackers, so yeah, kinda depends on what setup ur running.

Been doing this 3 years, and honestly I don't buy the hype that WireGuard's always faster in real-world use. Yeah, it's lean but openvpn's been tweakable for ages and works everywhere. Speed tests ain't everything, gotta test in your own setup.

Exactly, everyone's environment is different so what flies for one might lag for another, so yeah, do your own testing if you wanna avoid surprises and not just follow the herd blindly.

90% of my tests show WireGuard hitting 1.2Gbps while OpenVPN lingers around 800Mbps, but in real world I've seen OpenVPN hold better on flaky networks. speed isn't everything, stability and tweakability matter too, lol. ymmv, just gotta test with your setup.

I gotta disagree a bit, I tried WireGuard for a while and yeah it's fast but I ran into issues with some providers dropping support or not having it properly set up which kinda defeats the purpose if you want reliable streaming or torrenting. once I switched back to OpenVPN I noticed it's not always about raw speed, sometimes stability and compatibility matter more especially if you're on flaky Wi-Fi or traveling. speed tests are cool but don't forget real-world usage can be totally different.

just my 2 cents, speed tests are cool but real world stability and support matter more imo. sometimes openvpn or ikev2 can be more reliable on flaky networks even if they seem slower in labs. bruh, gotta balance speed with consistency, especially for long sessions.

careful with that, stability on flaky networks is key but don't forget that openvpn's been around for ages and sometimes its configs can be a pain to get right. ymmv on that, some providers have better support for it than others. just keep in mind that speed and stability aren't always linear, especially in real world.

tbh just my 2 cents, but isn't the real question more about which one works best for your specific setup rather than pure speed or security?

Haha, yeah, I always say it's like choosing a weapon in a game - depends on what you need. I've used all three, and honestly, WireGuard is my favorite for speed and easy setup but OpenVPN still feels more flexible for some configs. I guess ymmv, but for me it's more about what fits your gear and threat model.

lol, honestly, for speed, WireGuard can hit around 1.5-2x faster than OpenVPN in some tests, like 400 Mbps vs 200 Mbps on same setup. My tip: use speedtest-cli (like 'speedtest-cli --simple') right after connecting to compare real-world performance fam.

Last month I was testing these three for a client project and honestly, I got completely different results. WireGuard was not the fastest in my environment, actually OpenVPN was pretty close and sometimes even slightly faster depending on the server location. I think it's all about the network conditions and configs, not just the protocol. So don't buy into the hype too much, test your own setup. Stay

Yeah, rn I'm testing on a 1 Gbps connection and noticed that right after switching protocols, openvpn hits around 600 Mbps, IKEv2 can do roughly 700 Mbps, but WireGuard usually stays around 800-850 Mbps. Not always consistent tho, sometimes VPN server load or encryption overhead skews it. I've seen openvpn

Last month I was testing these protocols on a multi-user setup and noticed that IKEv2 was more stable under heavy load, while WireGuard seemed to fluctuate a bit. Have you guys noticed any difference in stability or packet loss between them when multiple users are connected?

if you're aiming for speed on a high bandwidth connection, consider tweaking MTU settings for WireGuard. it often boosts performance a good chunk. also, on some setups, using a lower encryption level with WireGuard can speed things up without dropping too much security. just a tip if you're chasing every Mbps.

ok so different angle: I once ran a test on a super slow VPS and found that while WireGuard was faster in theory, OpenVPN was more reliable with less disconnects, even if it was slower. Sometimes, what works on a high-end setup ain't the same on the low-end rigs lol.
