Double VPN speed hit - real numbers for streaming?

finally got a multi-hop setup working with Netflix US from Europe lol. but man the speed drop is insane. just wanna share some real data and see if anyone else has played around with this. been testing for like two weeks, using NordVPN's double VPN thing and also a self-hosted chain with WireGuard on two VPS's. Nord double (OpenVPN to OpenVPN) gave me about 45% of my normal speed. self-hosted WireGuard to WireGuard was better, maybe 65%. but here's the weird part - Netflix still worked totally fine on both, no buffering on 1080p. for privacy freaks maybe it's worth it? for just unblocking stuff tho it feels way over the top smh. anyone else got real numbers on streaming with multi-hop? does the extra hop even matter if the exit node is in some "clean" place?

you think so? afaik, the main benefit of multi-hop is the extra layer of obfuscation, not necessarily speed or streaming quality. speed drops are expected but netflix usually doesn't care if it works.

bruh, 65%? that's actually not bad if it's stable, but man, for streaming I'd still want higher. gotta wonder if all the extra hops really matter if Netflix still plays fine tho.

bruh, wonder if using UDP instead of TCP for WireGuard could boost that speed more? smh, feels like the extra hop's just a placebo if Netflix don't even buffer. anyone tried that?

Different angle: maybe it's not about the hops but about how the exit node's IP looks to Netflix. If Netflix doesn't flag that IP as suspicious, it might not matter how many hops you throw in. So, focusing on picking a "clean" exit IP might be more worth than stressing about the number of hops.

45% speed drop and Netflix still chillin at 1080p? bruh, that's kinda wild honestly. makes you wonder if the extra hop is just a fancy bonus for privacy when it comes to streaming, or if it's just a placebo

different angle: maybe Netflix doesn't care about the hops as long as the IP looks legit. if the exit node isn't flagged, the streaming quality stays decent, no matter how many layers of VPN you add. kinda makes the extra hop feel more like a privacy dance than a streaming hurdle.

lol yeah, it's kinda funny how Netflix doesn't seem to care rn. makes you wonder if the extra hops are just for privacy nerds, or if streaming sites just can't keep up.

thanks for the replies yall. yeah, I agree the main point is obfuscation, not speed but I was curious about real streaming numbers. using UDP might help but honestly, I think Netflix doesn't care much about speed drops if it plays smooth. ymmv tho, maybe some configs or providers handle multi-hop better.

Around 30-50% speed loss is typical, afaik. Streaming usually still works but you might get buffer if your base speed isn't high enough. Just keep in mind it varies a lot depending on the servers and your connection

Always check your base speed first, double VPN can cut it in half sometimes. If you're streaming 4k at 50 Mbps normally, double VPN might leave you with 25 or even less, so ymmv. Anyone tried different server combos for less slowdown?

lol yeah that's the kind of drop im seeing too. if ur base speed is low to start with, double VPN just kills it. i mean, 4k buffer city if ur not careful. ymmv for sure

yep exactly, that kinda drop makes 4k buffering a real risk if ur base speed isn't high enough bruh. stay safe out there. catch ya later

ngl, double VPN usually doesn't double your latency, it's more like a small hit unless ur base speed is trash. don't expect perfect streaming unless u got good speed to start. ymmv tho

Last month I tested double VPN myself on a few different streaming services and honestly the speed dip was noticeable but not game-breaking if I started with decent speeds. I think people forget that the initial baseline makes a big difference, especially if you're just scraping by with low Mbps. If your speed's solid, a little slowdown isn't gonna ruin your stream, but if you're already lagging it might cause some buffering.

Last month I threw on double VPN just to see how much it would hurt my streaming speeds and honestly it was pretty much what everyone says, a small dip but nothing that kills the stream unless ur starting with slow base speeds. So wanna ask, anyone tried different VPN combos or configs to minimize that speed hit?
