Everyone posting VPN speed tests but nobody explains their setup or variables. They'll show a graph and say 'this one is fastest' without listing server distance, hardware, or even the time of day. That's not data, it's an ad. My own tests with the same provider can swing from 250 Mbps to 80 Mbps based on the server region alone and that's on a wired gigabit connection. I need to see if anyone else is actually documenting this stuff properly - ISP, baseline speed, the exact test server URL, protocols tested, number of hops. Otherwise all these 'reviews' are just noise.
 
smh so true, everyone just parrots the same quick tests w/o thinking about the setup. I tried my own VPN tests and saw huge swings too, like from 200 to 50 Mbps just switching servers. nobody ever shows the real details like location, protocol, or hops, just the pretty graph. it's basically useless without the context.
 
Have to disagree here. I've done plenty of speed tests on the same provider and the swings are usually due to network congestion or server load, not just region. I always check ping, hops, and run multiple tests at different times, but I've found even then the numbers can vary a lot. So yeah, variables matter but not necessarily the setup alone.
 
Spot on. I did some testing last month and saw the same thing. Same VPN provider, same server, different times of day, speeds ranged from 300 to 60 Mbps.
 
Haha, yeah, VPN speed tests are basically witchcraft without proper setup. I started using speedtest.net with the command line tool - gives way more consistent data cause I can log ISP, protocol, hops, everything. Fwiw, makes my tests way more legit than just clicking around.
 
Haha, I once did a VPN test in my closet with a toaster nearby and got totally different results. Turns out, unless you document every little variable, you're just guessing. Nothing wrong with being skeptical of speed graphs w/o context.
 
bruh, one time I ran a speed test in my living room and it was 300 Mbps, then I moved to the bathroom and it dropped to 70. same provider, same setup, totally different results. people act like VPN testing is some science but forget about all the little variables,
 
Honestly, most VPN speed tests are just a bunch of noise if u don't log all the variables. I once got totally different speeds just changing the time of day or server region, no joke. u gotta be precise or it's all just guesswork.
 
Are you sure you're not confusing speed tests with actual VPN performance? Speed can vary a lot based on server load, distance, and protocols, but that doesn't mean all tests are useless. Imho, proper testing requires more than just snapshot numbers.
 
spot on. I tried logging all variables but honestly even then, speeds can still fluctuate a lot based on so many hidden factors like routing and server load. Precise is good but sometimes u just gotta accept the variability, especially with VPNs.
 
Thanks for chiming in. Yeah, congestion and server load matter but even then, if you don't control or report those variables, your results are still pretty useless. Ping and hops are useful, but without knowing baseline speeds and exact server info, you're just guessing. Anyone claiming to be serious about VPN testing should be transparent about all that.
