So I posted about this before but man it's been a trip down memory lane comparing how things used to be when I first started messing with VPNs. Back in the day, setting up VPNs on routers was like a badge of honor, kinda like building your own gaming rig, felt proud but man was it a pain in the ass with all the configs and hoping it didn't brick your router. Fast forward to now and just using VPN apps is so easy I almost forget the struggle but I decided to do some speed tests to see if the old school way still holds up. Ran some quick tests on a VPN on router vs VPN app and surprise, the router setup still holds decent speed but the app is almost always faster with less latency, probably cuz of better optimization. I remember those days when I'd get like 20-30% lower speeds on router setups but now it's a different story. The privacy side too, on routers you get a network-wide VPN, so all devices are covered which is dope, but the app is more flexible, you can toggle it on specific devices or apps. Feels kinda nostalgic seeing how far we've come but also glad I can just slap a VPN app now and not worry about the mess. That toggle feature in apps is nice but remember, if ur main concern is privacy not just convenience, u should alsooo look into kill switches and DNS leak protection in ur VPN app. Without those, the flexibility doesn't mean much if ur data leaks anyway.

Make sure ur router's firmware is up to date and supports strong VPN protocols like OpenVPN or WireGuard, otherwise ur speeds and security might suffer. Also, check if ur router has DNS leak protection built-in, cuz even with a VPN, leaks can happen and expose ur real IP.

careful with speed tests, don't forget to test with different servers, I saw my speeds vary like 10-20% just switching regions. Also, using WireGuard on router gave me like 50-70 Mbps on a 100 Mbps line, but apps pushed almost full speed. Just remember, older routers with weak CPUs can bottleneck VPN speeds even if firmware is up to date

90% of the time I find router VPN faster and more stable, especially if you got a decent router. Sure, it might seem clunky but the speed tests I ran showed a solid edge for router VPNs, ymmv. Plus, no messing around on each device.

careful with makin assumptions, bro. speed can vary wild, depends on the router, the device, the network. just cuz u got a beefy router dont mean its faster all the time, sometimes apps on device are more nimble. don't sleep on the software side.

Most of yall sleepin on split tunneling, bruh. It lets you run certain apps through VPN and others normal, sooo you get speed without sacrificing security. Helps you avoid that slow VPN bottleneck when only some stuff needs to be protected. Try that before ditching one setup for the other.
